PAGE 9 The Flash Science and religion merge in symposium Age-old debates about the nature of creation and cul tural mythology have pitted the ideologies of science and religion against one another, and many believe the two systems of belief cannot co exist. Participants in “Human Nature: A Symposium of Re ligion and Science” hope to find commonalities between the opposing fields. During the two-day symposium, which starts today and runs through Saturday, speakers will discuss human under standing of how religion and science can complement each other. But Anoushiravani said the move is only temporary as DDS looks for a permanent home elsewhere in the EMU. The vice president made the decision after an incident early Tuesday morning, when a DDS dispatcher had a frightening en counter with an unidentified male who punched a hole through the window of the DDS front door. He then stared at the dispatcher before walking away. After the incident, DDS co-direc tors decided it was time to move. “Recent events just transpired to the point where it just is un safe for us to be there,” said Bri an Wise, DDS co-director. The dispatcher who worked Tuesday morning, who request ed not to have her name used in this story, said she was alone in the office and was talking on the dispatch radio when she heard a loud noise. Called the “Love Bug” virus, the deviant file, which may have originated in the Philippines, has circled the globe via e-mail. Victims receive an e-mail with the subject line “ILOVEYOU.” The text of the message contains an attach ment labeled “LOVELET TER." Once that document is opened, the virus attacks. At least one mutation of the virus has already appeared. E-mails with a subject line of “Joke” and an attachment of “Really Funny,” will cause the same damage as the “Love Bug.” “When you execute this script, it starts doing all kinds of heinous stuff,” said Spencer Smith, a University micro computer support specialist who has been working on the problem on campus. Users of Microsoft Win dows 95 and 98 can expect the virus to create copies of itself and forward them to everyone in the users Microsoft Outlook address book. The virus will reset a com puter’s Web browser settings and change the home page to a site that automatically down loads more virus codes. Kilkenny sent a resignation letter to Board President Randy Pape Tuesday, citing frustra tions about the University’s de cision to join the Worker Rights Consortium and Nike CEO Phil Knight’s decision to pull his personal contributions to the University as a result.
