Boyfriend has mutual attraction to another woman Ask Harlan Dear Harlan, My boyfriend and I have become friends with this woman he works with. We have gone out with her and her husband before and really enjoy each other’s company. A couple of weeks ago, my boyfriend told me he is attracted to her and that if he were single and she were single, he’d pur sue a relationship with her. He told me that he has also told her this, and the feel ing is mutual. Now, I get nervous when they’re alone together. He often compliments her on the way she looks, but he does the same for me. He told me he loves me too much to cheat on me and I have nothing to worry about. I’ve heard that before in past relationships and have gotten hurt. What do I do? I love him and enjoy be ing with him, but I feel threatened. — A little concerned Dear Concerned, I think it’s great that your boyfriend tells you about every woman that he wants. It’s so very hard to find a guy who can be so brutally honest that he has total disregard for your feelings and emotional well-being. He’s a real keeper! What’s this guy thinking? You need to ask him because I have no idea. Maybe he’s trying to make you jeal ous. Maybe he’s trying to push you away. Maybe he’s just a complete idiot with zero common sense. You have every right to feel threatened, and you have every right to dump him if you don’t like his answer. A healthy rela tionship is about trust, but how can you trust him when he tells you this woman would act on her feelings if she wasn’t married? It’s absurd. If you do stay with him, don’t put up with this ever again. Dear Harlan, So, I went out with this guy for four years. I thought he was the one. Then, I guess he decided he needed to play the field in his last year in college. We "broke up" in October but main tained the physical portion of the relation ship until January. We got back to school and he started dating this little girl he takes to the bars and brings to his friends house in front of me. He and I have since had a few encoun ters in which we couldn’t control our physical attraction for each other and end ed up in bed. One of which was the day she left for spring break. He told me he has no intention of telling his new girl about our sexual encounters. She has the right to know if someone she is sleeping with is sleeping with some one else, not just relationship speaking, but that is just not safe sex. Am I crazy because I want to tell her everything? What should I do, if anything? — Super Bitter Ex Dear Bitter, That’s so sweet of you to be so con cerned about her sexual safety. Someone else might think you’re telling her out of bitter spite rather than public health. If you want to tell the girl, then tell the girl, but don’t pretend it’s for her well-be ing. This isn’t about her. It’s about you re senting your boyfriend for dating this “lit tle girl.” You’re upset and you’re angry and you’re trying to fool yourself. It’s childish, and it’s wrong. Stop ob sessing over the guy and move forward. If anything, he sounds like a creepy cheater you’re better off avoiding. *Harlan is not a licensed psychologist, therapist or physician, but he is a licensed driver.
