The Ducks’ young guns led the way as five finished first-place in their events and another had her best race ever. Of the five first place finishes, four were taken by underclassmen. The Ducks’ throwing corps col lected two of the top honors. Freshman Lindsay Horton record ed season bests in the shot put and hammer, placing first with a 38 foot, 9-inch throw and fifth with a 137-5 throw, respectively. Redshirt senior Heather Hill won the hammer throw with a season-best mark of 154-9, j ust shy of her 156-11 personal best from last season. Redshirt sophomore Shennae McNairy’s time of 14.73 sec onds in the 100 meter hurdles was the fastest time of the year for Oregon. Meanwhile, freshman Erica Kelly sprinted to victory in the 200, finishing in Softball continued from page 9 the top of the sixth on Jill Robin son’s 10th home run of the year. Saturday’s game was the polar opposite of Sunday’s. The Ducks pounded ten runs en route to a 10-0 win. Pitchers Haag and McMurren (9-9) combined for a four-hit shutout. Haag won her third game, pitching 4.1 innings of two-hit ball. Oregon first got on the board in the top of the fifth when sopho more catcher Kelly Planche led off with her first dinger of the year. Missy Coe also drove in two runs in the inning with her 11th double, and Triawn Custer drove her home with a single. With a 4-0 lead, Oregon went right back to work in the top of the sixth, scoring three more runs. Holly Ray led off with a single and Planche reached on an error, set ting the table for Shelton, who crushed her first homer of the year. The Ducks continued pouring it on in the next inning, scoring three more runs. Shelton had two more RBIs in the inning, giving her a ca reer-high of five. 26.66. Teammate Alison Brown finished second in 26.70. Freshman Deb Lee added a win in the long jump with a leap of 17 3. Nattalie Wright finished fifth in the 1,500 meters with a personal best time of 4 minutes, 39.07. The sophomore’s efforts rewarded her with her first-ever Pac-10 qualify ing time. Freshman Eri Macdonald also claimed a Pac-10 mark in the 1,500 with a sixth-place finish in 4:40.31. The meet was Macdon ald’s Oregon debut. Also finishing well was pole vaulter Holly Speight, who fin ished second in the pole vault with a season-best mark of 12-0. Both track teams compete Satur day at home in the Hayward Relays. While the Oregon bats were on fire in the first game against Ari zona State, the Ducks opened the weekend with a rare low-scoring 3-2 affair with the No. 2 Wildcats. TSenior Lindsey Welch hit a two-run job in the top of the sec ond. But that lead wouldn’t stand; the Wildcats answered in the bot tom of the fourth with two runs. The game remained tied into extra innings. And in the bottom of the eighth, the Wildcats took the lead for good when the win ning run crossed the plate on a single with none out. Saturday, April 8.
