Young guns lead the way
at the Willamette Open
■ Five members of the Oregon women's track and field
team claim first-place finishes at the low-key event
By Scott Pesznecker
Oregon Daily Emerald
Taking the opportunity to hone
their skills before getting into the
thick of the outdoor season,
eleven members of the Oregon
women’s track and field team trav
eled to Salem on Saturday to com
pete in the Willamette Open.
The Ducks’ young guns led the
way as five finished first-place in
their events and another had her
best race ever. Of the five first
place finishes, four were taken by
underclassmen.
The Ducks’ throwing corps col
lected two of the top honors.
Freshman Lindsay Horton record
ed season bests in the shot put and
hammer, placing first with a 38
foot, 9-inch throw and fifth with a
137-5 throw, respectively.
Redshirt senior Heather Hill
won the hammer throw with a
season-best mark of 154-9, j ust shy
of her 156-11 personal best from
last season.
Redshirt sophomore Shennae
McNairy’s time
of 14.73 sec
onds in the 100
meter hurdles
was the fastest
time of the year
for Oregon.
Meanwhile,
freshman Erica Kelly sprinted to
victory in the 200, finishing in
Softball
continued from page 9
the top of the sixth on Jill Robin
son’s 10th home run of the year.
Saturday’s game was the polar
opposite of Sunday’s. The Ducks
pounded ten runs en route to a 10-0
win. Pitchers Haag and McMurren
(9-9) combined for a four-hit
shutout. Haag won her third game,
pitching 4.1 innings of two-hit ball.
Oregon first got on the board in
the top of the fifth when sopho
more catcher Kelly Planche led
off with her first dinger of the
year. Missy Coe also drove in two
runs in the inning with her 11th
double, and Triawn Custer drove
her home with a single.
With a 4-0 lead, Oregon went
right back to work in the top of the
sixth, scoring three more runs.
Holly Ray led off with a single and
Planche reached on an error, set
ting the table for Shelton, who
crushed her first homer of the year.
The Ducks continued pouring it
on in the next inning, scoring three
more runs. Shelton had two more
RBIs in the inning, giving her a ca
reer-high of five.
26.66. Teammate Alison Brown
finished second in 26.70.
Freshman Deb Lee added a win
in the long jump with a leap of 17
3.
Nattalie Wright finished fifth in
the 1,500 meters with a personal
best time of 4 minutes, 39.07. The
sophomore’s efforts rewarded her
with her first-ever Pac-10 qualify
ing time.
Freshman Eri Macdonald also
claimed a Pac-10 mark in the
1,500 with a sixth-place finish in
4:40.31. The meet was Macdon
ald’s Oregon debut.
Also finishing well was pole
vaulter Holly Speight, who fin
ished second in the pole vault
with a season-best mark of 12-0.
Both track teams compete Satur
day at home in the Hayward Relays.
While the Oregon bats were on
fire in the first game against Ari
zona State, the Ducks opened the
weekend with a rare low-scoring
3-2 affair with the No. 2 Wildcats.
TSenior Lindsey Welch hit a
two-run job in the top of the sec
ond. But that lead wouldn’t stand;
the Wildcats answered in the bot
tom of the fourth with two runs.
The game remained tied into
extra innings. And in the bottom
of the eighth, the Wildcats took
the lead for good when the win
ning run crossed the plate on a
single with none out.
