Autzen continued from page 1 November 2000, said Steve McBride, assistant athletic director of internal operations. The project is scheduled to be finished by the fall of 2002. The plans have come under fire from some citizen groups, howev er. The East Alton Baker Park Plan ning Committee expressed concern that the expansion will result in in creased traffic in the surrounding area and litter in the park. The Autzen expansion is target ing the south side of the stadium, with the addition of 12,000 seats, a grand staircase, and redesigned handicapped access ramps. The expansion plans also call for a larger transit station for the Lane Transit District and other buses, restroom improvements, 32 pri vate skyboxes, a club seating area and parking lot renovations to im prove access to the facility. “The question of parking hasn’t been addressed in this proposal,” said Charles Biggs, a member of the park committee who spoke of the negative impact the expansion could have on the park. “More people Bobby Lee continued from page 1 “The difficult part of letting go is that I’m not sure our generation will be represented,” Lee said. “Students bring $350 million an nually to the local economy, and it’s important that someone in City Hall recognizes that and ensures that some of those funds come back to the University area. With out students, the U of O wouldn’t be here, and without the Universi ty, which is the largest employer in Lane County, Eugene would just be another Medford. ” Lee “has been very supportive of the concerns and needs of students,” said ASUO community outreach di rector Mariam Fowler. “He’s always been willing to offer his help.” Working consistently with the ASUO, Lee has helped efforts to boost student voter turnouts, pre would mean more pressure on the park and the use of its parking lots. ” The University currently uses two lots on park land during game days for staff parking. “Our plan is to expand the alter nate means of transportation, such as foot traffic, bike traffic and ex panding the park and ride system with LTD,” Me Bride said. Biggs raised the issue of in creased litter in the park from peo ple using the Autzen Foot Bridge after the games. The park commit tee is pushing for a commitment from the University to clean up a larger portion of the trash left be hind by game spectators. The University currently cleans up litter after games within 50 feet of the parking lots it uses. Some committee members agreed with Biggs that the Univer sity could do more to prevent in creased garbage in the park. “I think the Athletic Depart ment, on behalf of the University, has an obligation to be a good neighbor,” said Robert Melnick, committee member and dean of architecture and allied arts. The committee will wait to make a decision until its next meeting on Jan. 31. vent Halloween disturbances and focus on legislative issues, ad dressing topics such as renters’ rights. Lee said one of his major achievements in office includes persuading the city to enhance homeless services and allow car camping on designated public and private parking lots. During the final year of his term, Lee hopes to establish a council to address urban watershed issues, further expand homeless services and help restructure city govern ment to focus on long-term goals and not get bogged down in what he called “hot button" issues. “There’s a part of me that still misses being student body presi dent, and there will be a part of me that will always miss being city councilor,” Lee said. “But life is not a sprint but a marathon, and you need to always look ahead. That’s what I’m doing.” ToMo' Welcome Back Ducks! Serving South Eugene and UO 484-PAPA (7272) Serving Springfield, Chase Village, Ducks Village, University Commons 746-PAPA (7272) FREE DELIVERY!
