And when they did, the Oregon men’s basketball (11-2 overall, 2-0 in Pacific 10 Conference) was right there to dispose of them 83 68 in front of 8,666 rowdy fans at McArthur Court. The Ducks now have their sights set on a much more experi enced opponent, ' third ranked Stanford, on Satur day. “We got off to a good start offensively and our guards did a great job against their young back court,” senior forward A.D. Smith said. “We didn’t play our best Turn to Men’s hoops, page 12 ■ Sean Lamply’s 29-point effort is offset by the sloppy play of California’s freshmen in the Golden Bears’ loss Oregon Leaders Scoring: Jones 20 Scales 15 Wright 14 Rebounding: Bracey 6 Smith 4 Scales 4 Assists: Wright 6 Jones 6 Scales 3 44 Hike rowdy crowds. They don't affect me. Sean Lamply Califonia forward j j By Brett Williams Oregon Daily Emerald The taunts echoed from the student section at McArthur Court. Lamply, you suck! Lam ply, you’re overrated! There were reasons the students — as well as others in the crowd of 8,666 — were trying to get into the head of California’s Sean Lamply on Thursday night. The 6-foot-7 junior forward was California’s only legiti mate scoring threat on a young team with four true freshman in the starting Turn to Oregon, page 12 Scott Barnett Emerald Freddie Jones was hot, finishing with a team-high 20 points to go with his six assists. The Ducks down Cal, Stanford is next No. 23 Oregon gets its second Pac-10 win, beating Cal 67 SI in Berkeley Thursday night By Mirjam Swanson Oregon Daily Emerald One more. After beating California 67-51 on Thursday night in its ninth-straight road game during this utterly draining, school-record, 10-game long road odyssey that the No. 23 Oregon women’s basketball team (11-4 over all, 2-0 Pacific-10 Confer ence) is on, there’s only one game left before the Ducks can return to their beloved McArthur Court. One rather big game. One with conceivable Pac-10 ti tle implications. Because it’s against Stan ford — at Stanford. And like most of their Pac-10 counterparts, the Ducks haven’t won a game at Maples Pavilion in years. Since 1987, in fact. Saturday will be as good an opportunity as any for Oregon to do so, especially because right now the Ducks are rolling. They let the less-experi enced Golden Bears (5-7,0 2 Pacific-10) hang around for a while, even allowing them to pull to within six points with 12 minutes to go But from there Oregon — currently ranked No. 42 in the Ratings Percentage In dex despite its top-25 placement in both the As sociated Press and ESPN/USA Today coaches’ polls — took over, finishing the game with a 20-10 run. Junior forward Angelina Wolvert connected on all six of her shot attempts, fin ishing with a game-high 15 points Nicole Strange, the Ducks’ only senior, contin ued to shoot tremendously as she has all season. She went 7-for-8 and finished with 14 points. Sophomore point guard Shaquala Williams wound up with 13, to go with her six assists. Center Shavaki Jackson led Cal with 12 points. With Thursday’s victory, Oregon head coach Jody Runge extends her record to 13-0 against Cal. The Ducks’ game with Stanford will be aired on FoxSports Network at 1 p.m..
