Most moving companies require a 1000-pound mini mum for hire. Allied Van Lines has a contract with the University and relocates a lot of Ducks, said a local dispatcher who asks to re main unidentified. He said Allied has been handling about three or four estimate requests a day, which equals the number of moves his company can ac commodate. If a person lives in the hills or some other remote location, a smaller truck is used to shuttle the person’s belong ings from house to moving van. Estimates are difficult, too, he said, because people invariably can’t decide what’s going and what’s staying. “You go in to their house and look at their stuff,” he explained, “and they’ll say, ‘Well, I might give this to Aunt Heddy, or this might go to Grandma, or I’ll probably leave this for Junior.’ Once we deter mine a price, however, it’s guaranteed.” If you’re leaving but your possessions are stay ing, at least for now, New Way Moving and Storage is available to stash prop erty. Terry Hopper, an em ployee with New Way, pointed out that her com pany is different than those “come-and-go-as you-please” mini-storage sites, but she believes her rates are favorable in com parison. With an 800 pound minimum per vault, rates run $1.50 per 100 pounds per month, with a one-time $3 han dling charge. Oh yeah, and don’t wait until the last minute.
