Budgets OKed for EMU and finance committees Some won, some lost in lengthy Student Senate funding deliberations By Jason George Oregon Daily Emerald The Student Senate meeting Wednesday night was like “Titan ic” without Kate Winslet — long. After meeting for more than three hours, the senators agreed on a bud get for the EMU, Athletic Depart ment Finance Committee and the Programs Finance Committee. Also, the Academic Council spoke on the proposed new add/drop period. The EMU budget was approved for $2,584,499, which is funded from student incidental fees. Its benchmark was set at 3 percent but the actual increase is only 2.63 percent, $66,312. The decrease from the benchmark was a result, in part, of maximizing student work study in lieu of staff salaries, said Campbell Kidd, budget chair man of the EMU Board. Once the budget was presented, the first item discussed was a new grant of $200 for 10 student groups to pay for technical services when using the EMU Ballroom. A $2,000 total to be shared between all the groups or funding for the first 10 student groups was pro posed. At first, the Senate voted 9 to-6 to remove the grant, suggest ing the Senate control this fee, but after more discussion the Senate reversed its decision. Also, the reduction of $2,300 in funds from an administrative fund was discussed but ultimately vot ed down. The fund, under control of EMU Director Dusty Miller, was used this fiscal year for employee training and name tags for EMU employees, among other things. “There are going to be emergen cies. I have the freedom to spend the money as needed, but I have an obligation to report the funds,” Miller said in response to questions about the administrative funds. The Programs Finance Commit tee budget of $2,033,601 was also approved. The PFC had set a benchmark of 2 percent, but the budget was actually increased by nearly 5 percent. PFC Chairman Dan Reid justified the missed benchmark because of increases in the price of childcare for students, conferences presented by campus groups and a professional staff in crease. Of more than 90 groups that the PFC reviews, Reid said it de creased or maintained at present level the budgets of 46 groups. The Athletic Department Fi nance Committee received its pro posed budget of $1,075,278. In a memo distributed at the meeting, the ADFC stated it felt this budget was acceptable because this is the amount they have received for the last two fiscal years. In other business, the Academic Council mentioned its move to discuss increasing the add/drop period at the next University Sen ate meeting. 005925 (Happy April Fool's Day!) excli/JsIWly 1166 South A • Springfield • 726-6969 • Open 24 Hours (almost) Eugene's Best Futons ROCK SOFT FUTON Eugene's Best Futons 1231 Alder St. • 686-5069 M-S 11-6 Sun. 12-5 Paints, Pens & Paper Photography Glassworks Fibers Arts Sculpture Ceramics Photography Woodworking Jewelry & Metals Bicycle Maintenance i The EMU Craft Center is a comprehensive Art Program offering well equipped facilities and workshops in many area of Visual arts.
