Testing centers Continued from Page 1 in one room,” Stritzke said. “Sometimes you’d plug in your headphones to watch a video and the sound would bother the other people.” Stritzke said Kaplan helped him prepare for his LSAT exam to get into law school. “The first practice test, they put me in the 40th percentile,” he said. “Now I’m more at the 70th percentile.” Kaplan guarantees students will achieve gains in their test per formance. The promised gains are different for each type of test. For example, for the GRE Ka plan promises a 220-point change on the test’s point scale of200-800 points. Kaplan can only provide prac tice exams for students. Morse said Kaplan will launch its bian nual test-drive on Feb. 27 and Feb. 28, where students can take the practice test of their choice for free. To take official tests for official scores, students have to go to des ignated test-taking sites, such as the Sylvan Learning Center and the UO Testing Center. Susan Lesyk, director of Acade mic Learning Services, said the UO Testing Center provides stu dents with a lower-cost alternative to the Kaplan center. Its prices range from $125 to $300. Lesyk said there are other ad vantages. “We actually use our own fac ulty for chemistry and physics,” she said. In addition, Lesyk said the cen ter purchases all its study materi als from the organizations that make the tests, whereas Kaplan manufactures its own materials. “If you’re in it for the profit, it’s really expensive to purchase the [official] materials,” she said. Lesyk said students only work with practice problems, not full length timed practice tests. “Everything leads up to a full length test. ” she said.
