Alleged mass grave i inspected in Kosovo j International monitors visited a site Tuesday to follow up on claims that 11 people are buried there By Melissa Eddy The Associated Press UROSEVAC, Yugoslavia — A team of international monitors visited an alleged mass grave site in southern Kosovo on Tuesday and heard ethnic Albanians re count the killings of the 11 women and children they said were buried there. The Kosovo Verification Mis sion said it was too soon to draw conclusions from the claims about the snowy site in Urose vac, 25 miles south of the provin cial capital of Pristina. But residents who said they helped bury the bodies last Au gust described how the ethnic Albanian victims were slain by a Serb shelling attack Aug. 27 as they tried to flee through the mountains. They said they had been able to report the deaths only recently, when the Organi zation for Security and Coopera tion in Europe established a hu man rights mission. “A whole family was buried there,” said Ruzhdi Jashar. He and other purported witnesses said the victims were three women and eight children, in cluding a 6-month-old baby. The investigation came as the American envoy for Kosovo, Christopher Hill, returned to the Serb province following an up surge of fighting that threatened a shaky truce. “I came to review the situa tion,” Hill said after meeting eth nic Albanian leader Ibrahim Ru gova in Pristina. He acknowledged a “serious deteri oration on the ground” in Koso vo during his absence — a refer ence to intense fighting in the north from Dec. 24-27. “We need to make sure that cease-fire holds,” Hill said. "The cease-fire is critical to getting a political settlement.” An informal cease-fire in Octo ber halted months of fighting be tween Serb forces and Kosovo Liberation Army rebels seeking independence for the province, which is populated overwhelm ingly by ethnic Albanians. More than 1,000 people have been killed since the Serb offen sive began last February, includ ing scores since the truce went into effect. The death toll rose when both Serb and Albanian sources re ported the shooting deaths late Monday of two ethnic Albanians who worked at a gasoline station in Vitina, 25 miles southeast of Pristina. Further details were not known. The bodies of more than a dozen ethnic Albanians and Serbs have recently been found in Kosovo in what appear to be gangland-style killings. At Urosevac, the monitoring team did not dig at the site, and efforts were continuing to deter mine whether it was a mass grave. Lynn Holland, a human rights monitor for the OSCE, said photographs and residents’ ac counts were being compiled.
