MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chi cano de Aztlan) "When I first came here, I was re ally lost as to what I was going to do, where I was going to go,” MEChA co-director Mario Sifuentez said. “MEChA provided a base for me, somewhere to go when I needed help with anything, whether it be school wise or personal. ” MEChA provides support and a community for Chicano and Latino students on campus. MEChA is also an activist group and Sifuentez said this year they plan to address issues of in creasing the number of bilingual and Latino workers in Oregon Hall, implementing a Chicano studies program and continuing to educate the University about the Gardenburger boycott. Another program MEChA spon sors is the Ganas program at Kennedy Middle School where three times a week MEChA students tutor and plan educational pro grams about Chicano and Latino heritage for children of Latino de scent. vvemaxe them more mtormed about their background and teach them things they don’t normally learn in school,” Sifuentez said. “This really gives these kids a sense of accomplishment.” MEChA is looking for more vol unteers to help with this program, Sifuentez said. He also hopes to get more student unions in volved. Kicking off its cultural events for the term, MEChA will host Daniel Valdez and Teatro Campesino, a theater group put together by the United Farm Workers. The group formed during the era of Cesar Chavez during the farmworker strikes and boycotts. The perfor mance will be in the Multicultural Center today at 1p.m. This term, MEChA is also spon soring a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration, Nov. 2. This is a traditional Mexican holi day that celebrates death and life. MEChA is looking for program coordinators and a volunteer to help start a newsletter. Regular meet ings will be held every Thursday at 5:30p.m. starting Oct. 15. “I can’t stress enough the impor tance of this office,” Sifuentez said. “This place has done a lot of good things and there’s a lot to get done.” Multicultural Center Unlike many student groups, the MCC downstairs in the EMU, Suite 33, doesn’t have an active members list or regular meetings. In fact, many students seen in die MCC are members of other unions. “Our purpose is to provide a place to have meetings, a place to feel comfortable,” Resource Coor dinator Serena Markstrom said. Besides its function as a general meeting area, the MCC helps co sponsor many events with other student unions. “We try to build unity and collaboration within the student unions,” Program Ad vocate Huy Ong said. Markstrom said the MCC has the largest available resource cen ter for the student unions. Materi al topics range from local to global issues and are available to be checked out by any student.
