LAURA GOSS/Emerald ‘The X-Fiies’ movie: The soundtrack is out there 00 REVIEW The X-Files Various artists ■ STYLE: Soundtrack ■ RATING: ★★★★★ By Michael Hines Student Activities Reporter This is not just a rumor, or even a paranoid theory. The soundtrack is out there, even though the movie isn’t yet. Months of promotion for the upcoming “The X-Files” sure summer blockbuster movie has fans of the show riled up and ready to go. The movie trailers have got ex pectations high, and if the soundtrack is any indication, the movie will be a classic. Starting with Filter’s cover of the Three Dog Night song “One” and ending with the obligatory “The X-Files Theme” remix by the Dust Brothers, this album gives an eerie sense of fear but still leaves room for hope. The album is a collection of some of the most inspiring bands of the ’90s, and the bands’ songs reveal a more experimental side that rarely makes the radio. The experiment begins with "One.” Al though it’s hard to imagine Richard Patrick, Filter’s aggressive vocalist, singing “One is the loneliest number,” he does manage to pull off the feat well. The song begins toned down, like the 1969 original, but the sound of Filter soon comes blasting through. “One” was an appropriate choice, given the dense feelings of isolation "The X-Files” charac ters often have. The Foo Fighters also threw an original song into the mix with “Walking After You,” a song vocalist Dave Grohl said in a radio in terview he wrote hoping it would run during a Mulder-Scully love scene. Unlike Filter, the Foo Fighters manage to keep the song mellow all the way through, and they com pleted an impressive song of hope. The Cure contributes “More Than This,” a song done with the band’s traditional heady overtones.
