Women* Thomas can win Iona iumn ■ Continued from Page 11 the middle." Among those Oregon women with aspirations of scoring at the championships are distance run ner Marie Davis, pole vauiter Ka rina Elstrom, heptathlete Jennifer Thomas, hurdler Tish Henes and javelin thrower Karis Howell. “Tish has run really well there; Karis has thrown really well there,” Heinonen said of the league meet. “We’ve got some re ally good people in the clutch." Howell will be looking to re peat her performance from last season, when she finished second to UCLA’s Suzy Powell as a fresh man. Powell enters this season’s meet again the No. 1-ranked javelin thrower. Howell and teammate Katie Pearmine are ranked third and sixth in the conference, respec tively. Howell sat out the May 15 Oregon Twilight meet to rest an ailing elbow. Henes ran the seventh-best 400 (( We've got some really good people in the clutch. » Tom Heinonen Women's head coach meters so far this season in the Pac-lOs last weekend, but will face bigger obstacles in Stanford. Henes will return to her specialty event, the 400 hurdles, for the championships. The woman who could pile up the most individual points for the Ducks is Davis, who is shunning the 1,500 meters for the double she attempted at last year’s Pac 10s, the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Davis finished fifth and sev enth, respectively, in those events last season but is expect ed to challenge Arizona’s Amy Skieresz for both titles this weekend. Skieresz won both I V/ t events at last year’s meet. Elstrom comes into the meet on a hot streak, having vaulted 12 feet, one inch or 12-2 in five of her last six meets. The Pac-10 leader is Stanford’s Melissa Feinstein, who will be vaulting at home. Fe instein’s season-best mark of 12-7 1/4 is a quarter inch shorter than Elstrom's personal best. One Oregon woman has al ready garnered eight points for the Ducks entering this weekend. Thomas took her third-consecu tive second-place finish at last weekend’s Pac-10 heptathlon championship and will be look ing to improve her point total in the long jump, high jump and 100-meter hurdles at Stanford. “She has a chance to win the long jump,” Heinonen said. “She’s got the third best mark coming in.” Thomas’ season best of 19-9 falls just short of the 20-0 1/4 mark tallied by Pac-10 leader Michelle Perry of UCLA. NICK MEDLEY/Emerald Freshman pole vaulter Karina Elstrom is one Duck who is expected to contend for a Pac-10 title this weekend.
