KWVA celebrates five years with show By Eric Collins Freelance Reports For five years, University stu dents have swung their radio dials past KDUK, through KNRQ and landed on University radio station KWVA at 88.1 FM. It looks like the community will get the opportunity to do that for at least four more years. The station, which music direc tor John Setzen said is regarded as one of the top 75 college radio sta tions in North America, recently received a four-year FCC license renewal. To celebrate its five-year exis tence, the station is hosting five t diverse Northwest bands Saturday at John Henry’s Tavern at 135 E. 11th Ave. from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. The show is 21 and over, and the station is suggesting a $5 dona tion. Headlining the show is San Jose’s Duster of UP! records in r Seattle, whom Setzen describes as playing “sonic" and “spacy” crescendo-driven music. The Vancouver, B.C., band Gaze, an all-female pop group that is signed with K Records in Olympia, is stopping for the party as part of its U.S. tour. The Olympia band Bangs, a trio signed with Kill Rock Stars in Olympia, are also performing as part of its U.S. tour. Setzen de scribes the pop band as “The Go Gos meet classic rock.” Eugene native band Bossanova 2600, signed with Northwest inde pendent label Jealous Butcher, is composed of former and current KWVA DJs. Setzen describes the Portland band as a mix of pop, lounge and independent rock. Finally, solo guitarist Jason Traeger, who has been recently featured on Olympia’s K Records compilation, will open the evening. Compared most often to Jonathan Richman, Setzen said Traeger is a “one-man electric gui tar experience." To keep the facts straight, Satur day doesn’t mark the precise five year anniversary of KWVA music. The station initially went on the air on May 27, 1993, at 1:32 p.m. But Setzen said the station orga nized the celebration around the tour date of the group Bangs, which was coming to Eugene Sat urday as part of its U.S. tour. Although previous KWVA an niversary parties have involved mostly local bands, Setzen said the station wanted to stretch its support to involve an all-star cast of independent record labels’ best bands. “Our idea is to get these under ground, independent bands out to the masses, so to speak,” Setzen said. “The bands are so diverse you can probably find something that you like.” r Emerald , Summer 1998 4 AAt Editor uv ®W e are now accepting applications for the summer term.
