Wildcat: Barnes praised by coaches m Continued from Page 7 She started 24 of the Wildcats’ 31 games in her first season. That about sums up Adia * Barnes the person and player. Tell her she can’t do some thing, then watch her do it. But Barnes admits she was im mature her freshman season, not playing for the team. Yet she aver aged more than 15 points and sev en rebounds. She continued to improve each season, as did Arizona. Her sophomore season, she helped the Wildcats win the Na tional Women’s Invitation Tour nament title by averaging more than 17 points and seven re bounds. And last season, she led Ari zona to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a first round win over Western Ken tucky. Barnes is a natural scorer. She seems to know just the right move to get by a defender and to the hoop. She scored only 12 points in Arizona’s win at McArthur Court last season, one of two Oregon home losses, but her 11 rebounds, offensive presence and ability were obvious. “She’s just a great player,” Ore gon head coach Jody Runge said. "She gets so much out of what she has and is doing a great job of scoring for them.” Barnes has left an equal impres sion on one of Oregon’s guards. “If she gets it inside, she’s going to go up strong with it all the time,” Oregon point guard Natal ie Hughes says. “She just works really hard at the game. You can tell she’s scrapping, getting re bounds.” Scoring is Barnes’ speciality, but her rebounding ability is something that often goes unno ticed. This season, she leads the con ference with 22 points per game and pulls down more than seven rebounds a contest. Despite garnering honorable mention All-American honors last season, Barnes is still under rated, says one opposing head coach. “Adia Barnes still hasn’t gotten the respect she deserves," Ne braska head coach Paul Sander ford says. “She had 23 points and 10 rebounds against us. She does that to everybody. If she isn’t an All-American, then I haven’t seen too many All-Americans. ” If Barnes was immature as a freshman, when the Wildcats fin ished 11-19 overall, she has grown into her role as their go-to player and leader as a senior. She has twice been named Pac 10 player of the week this season, including this past week, and scored 33 points, two shy of her career high, against Arizona State last Saturday. She says the Wildcats, who in re cent seasons have seemed to have been on the brink of a breakout sea son, are different this season. "Just coming into the game our confidence shows a lot more,” Barnes says. “We think we can win and should win.” Against Stanford a week ago Monday, they proved that, hand ing the Cardinal its first confer ence loss in more than two years. Fora team led by a mama’s girl, that’s not a bad accomplishment.
