Ducks look to pull away from WSU Oregon has a chance to break a tie with the Cougars for fourth place By Tim Pyle Freelance Sports Reporter The Oregon Club Sports hock ey team is looking to make a statement in two games against Washington State at Lane County Ice Arena this weekend. The Ducks face the Cougars at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Satur day nights. Oregon (8-6-1 overall, 7-5 Pa cific-8 Hockey Conference) is tied with Washington State for fourth place in the conference. Southern California has a firm grasp on first place, and Stanford and UCLA round out the top three. The first three teams and the host of the Pac-8 Tournament, which is Oregon this season, re ceive the four spots in the tourna ment Feb. 21-22. Although the Ducks are already assured of a berth in the postseason, they don’t want to play the first-place Trojans in the first round of the tournament, Norman said. If the Ducks do not improve on their current conference stand ing, that fate would be fall them. “We’ve got to come out firing on all cylinders at the beginning of the game,” Norman said, point ing out the team that scores first usually wins in Oregon’s games. Norman also mentioned defen sive intensity and limiting mis takes as the keys to Oregon's suc cess against the Cougars. “If we play smart and consis tently, we’ll be fine,” Norman said. The Ducks came home with a tie, a loss and a possible forfeit victory from their trip to San Francisco last weekend. Oregon tied Palmer, a Division II San Francisco university, 3-3 on Thursday. Palmer scored a power-play goal with 24 seconds remaining in the third period to salvage a tie. Goalkeeper Stuart Robertson said the game was one of the Ducks’ best performances of the season. Friday was a different story for Oregon. Because of a malfunc tioning ice compressor, the ice was soft for the Ducks’ game against Stanford. The Ducks, who rely heavily upon their speed, were forced to play at the Cardinal’s methodical pace, ac cording to Norman. A 7-2 loss was the result. The broken compressor was not fixed in time for Oregon’s Saturday rematch with Stanford, and the game was canceled. Ore gon may receive a forfeit victory for the cancellation. So while 1 wish my beloved Niners were repre senting the NFC this season, 1 can’t help but admit the better, and more entertaining, team will be in San Diego in their place and predict Super Bowl glory once again for Cheeseheads everywhere. But don’t despair Bronco fans. This intrepid forecaster looked into his crystal ball once before in this column, and the Mariners are decidedly not World Series champs.
