NCAA Changes -——---— -— ■ -—=—=_1 CHAD PATTESON/Emerald Daryl Christian (top), who scored a major decision over Lock Haven's 150-pound Dave Murray at McArthur Court on Jan. 10, is one of the Oregon wrestlers who now has to abide try the NCAA's new weigh-in policy. Wrestlers adjust to NCAA rule changes The NCAA’s latest rules ban the use of saunas, rubber suits and diuretics for weight loss By Joel Hood Sports Reporter Oregon’s Daryl Christian lias to work out in a 90-degree room, four nights a week, to trim down to his wrestling weight of 150 pounds. He has to run, he has to lift and now, following a new NCAA weigh-in rule passed last week, he will have just two hours to replenish his body before competition. Fueled by the recent deaths of three wrestlers trying to make weight, the NCAA announced rule changes last Tues day that put new restrictions on the ways wrestlers can drop pounds before compe tition. Among the changes that are currently in effect are restrictions on the ways wrestlers 1 can cut weight. Wrestlers may not use WRESTLING saunas tor water toss, and rubber suits and diuretics cannot be used for any reason. The NCAA has already barred laxa tives, fluid restriction, self-induced vom iting, hot rooms, hot boxes and steam Turn to RULES, Page12A The rule certainly hit us hard. It's hard to make a big change like that... ” Rich Polkinghorn University wrestler Madden likely to play in Arizona game Forward Many Madden sat out Monday's practice as a preventative measure, ’ bead coach Ernie Kent said By Chris Hansen Assistant Sports Editor Forward Henry Mad den sat out Monday’s practice with a slightly sprained right wrist that he injured Saturday against Washington Mate tz__nZTI on a hard foul by Cougar ChllS center Leif Nelson. ,. c.... , . Hansen Sitting out practice is a preventative measure, said head coach Ernie Kent, who doesn't expect the team’s leading scorer to miss Thursday’s game against defending nation al champion Arizona. The play occurred in the first half when Madden was going up for a dunk on a fast break. Nelson slammed into Madden, send ing him to the floor. Nelson was charged with an intentional foul, and Madden con verted both free-throw attempts. Madden came back in the second half to score 12 of his 18 points, making all five of his field-goal attempts. More Madden One of the forward's second-half baskets was a hard-fought layin in which he was fouled by Washington State forward Carlos Daniel. After the play, an emotional Mad den turned toward a group of players and unleashed a verbal diatribe. Madden was hit with a technical foul by the referee, who thought he was talking to Daniel. Madden claimed lie was talking to teammate Jamar Curry. The incident occurred two plays after Daniel and a teammate emphatically bumped chests after a Daniel dunk. After the call against Madden, Kent got into a colorful exchange with the referee. “My comment to him was, ‘These are athletes of the 90s. Sometimes athletes of the 90s trash talk each other,”’ said Kent, referring to players on the same team. “You see it a lot where guys are bumping chests and knocking each other around.” If you need any proof of that, watch Ore gon’s starting lineup get introduced before the game. But Kent said that his team will not trash talk opponents. “We don’t do that,” he said. “I’ll sit a guy in a minute if I see anything like that.” Turn to MEN, Page 12A university officials complete athletic department study The NCAA study’s purpose is to “open the affairs of athletics to the university community. ” By Ryan Frank Sports Editor Members of the University administra tion have completed a self-study of the ath letic department for a new Division I Ath letics Certification that was instituted following the 1993 NCAA convention. The 400-page report was scheduled to be available for public access in the Knight Li brary’s Reserve Room on Tuesday after noon, but according to Duncan McDonald, University vice president for public affairs and development and the director of the committee, the release was delayed until 9 a.m. Wednesday morning because of scheduling difficulties. The self-study mandated by the NCAA has four evaluation sections: governance, academic integrity, fiscal integrity and eq uity. Each sub-committee was led by a mem ber of the University faculty. Ralph Barn hard, assistant head of the chemistry de partment, led the governance committee; Martha Pitts, director of admissions, acad emic integrity committee; Sherri McDow ell, director of business affairs, fiscal in tegrity; and Ken Lehrman, director of affirmative action, equity. “I feel as if the University athletic de partment looked very good,” McDonald said in a phone interview Tuesday after noon. McDonald said he did not want to dis cuss the specifics of the report, but he did mention that the study revealed that the graduation rate of student-athletes is higher than the graduation rate of the overall stu dent body. The report will next be reviewed by a peer review team, chaired by Utah State University President George Emert, when they visit the University April 7-10. The NCAA has three options when eval uating the University: certified, certified with conditions and not certified. Through last year, 120 of the 305 Divi sion I universities had gone through the self-study process and been reviewed by Turn to STUDY, Page12A (( I feel as if the University athletic department looked very good.
