The Ems recovered in the sixth when Hines opened the offen sive charge with his first double, and Jeff Spencer knocked him in with a single. First baseman Mark Burke followed with an other double off the right-field fence that put runners on second and third. Spencer later scored on a groundout. A sky-high pop-up by designated hitter John Arnold then fell in the middle of three Bears rushing to catch the ball in shallow center and scored Burke to tie the game once again, this time at four. In the seventh, Hines hit a 1-1 pitch into the right-field comer that put the Ems up by one, 5-4, when Mortimer scored from third. Bears’ pitcher Bill Everly then walked intentionally walked Burke to put runners on first and second. Smothers, the Ems’ hit leader with 22, hit a dribbler in front of home plate that Bears’ catcher Will McCrotty fielded and threw away, allowing Hines to score from second. Designated hitter John Arnold then stuck out with runners on second and third to end the inning. In the eighth, Brett Pierce led off the inning with a single and was promptly moved to third on Collin Wissen’s single to right field. Mortimer brought in the Ems’ seventh run of the night with a base hit up the middle that scored Pierce and made the score 7-4.
