As in 61, .400 and 56. He paused, pondering baseball’s most hallowed hitting marks. He rubbed his chin. He rolled his eyes. And still, he was having trouble coming up with the right answer. What about it, Junior? Which one will be the most difficult to reach? “Seeing how I haven’t done any of them,” he said Monday, “that’s tough.” Griffey and the other players with the best chance at making history — otherwise known as challenging the records of Roger Maris, Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio — were all working out at Jacobs Field for Tuesday night’s All-Star game. Fans, meanwhile, were wondering whether this will be the year any of those standards fall. For good reason, too. Maris hit 61 home runs in 1961. That year, he had 33 homers at the All-Star break. O’Neal, 18, turned a simple dispute into a bigger problem when he missed last week’s hearing on a disorderly conduct charge. Magistrate William Smith now has ordered the 7 loot center to appear at 10 a.m. Thursday for sentencing, The (Columbia) State re ported. The 15-day jail sentence already has been cut to a $300 fine, the newspaper said. O'Neal, scheduled to return to Portland this week to begin summer workouts, said last Thursday he didn’t know he was sup posed to show up in person and hoped to pay a fine by the end of the day. But his attorney, I.S. Leevy Johnson, said Monday that nothing could be done until the judge set a new date. “You can’t just walk in and say, ‘Here’s the money,’” John Turn to BLAZERS, Page 8 Rf7 P r MONDAY’S NEWS AND RESULTS Former Blazer in good condition after aneurysm (AP) — Former Portland Trail Blazers guard Dar nell Valentine has been moved from intensive care and was upgraded to good condition Monday at a suburban hospital after suffering an abdominal aneurysm. Valentine was brought to Legacy Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin by ambulance after suffering the aneurysm, said Kathi vanderZanden, a hospital spokeswoman. She did not know when Valentine was stricken but he needed emergency care, she said. Valentine, 38, played for the University of Kansas before he was drafted in the first round by the Blaz ers in 1981. Wise, Hines power Ems to 7-4 win ■ EMERALDS: Pooh Hines’ seventh-inning double to rightfield scored catcher Mark Mortimer and put the Ems up for good By Ryan Frank Sports Editor Jamie Wise insists he thrives on pressure. After his performance Monday, it’s hard to doubt him. The Ems’ 21-year-old left-hander entered Mon day’s game in the seventh inning with the score knot ted at four and found the bases loaded with Yakima Bears and only one out on scoreboard. Seven pitches later, tire Ems were out of the inning on a flyout and a strikeout. “I don’t feel too much pressure. I like those situa tions,” Wise said. “I went in did my job, got the two outs we needed.” The Ems, who appear to be awakening from a sea son-long offensive slump, scored twice in the bottom half of the seventh inning and once more in the eighth to hold on for the 7-4 win at Civic Stadium in front of 2,430 fans. “Wise, I think, turned the ballgame around with the bases loaded and the momentum helped my ball club pick it up and pull on through,” Eugene manager Jim Saul said of the game’s winning pitcher. The win pushes the Ems’ record to 6-15, but still keeps them in the Northwest League’s Southern Divi sion cellar. The loss drops Yakima to an equal 6-15 mark. Pooh Hines was the Ems’ offensive juggernaut go ing 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. “We swung the bats, we got a couple of clutch hits we hadn’t been getting in the past,” said Ems’ catcher Mark Mortimer, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Ben Wyatt started on the mound for the Ems, go ing 4 2/3 innings, giving up four runs and eight hits. “Wyatt had thrown close to 100 pitches, a lot of foul balls, that’s telling me he’s got a little something on the baseball," Saul said. Jason Flach kept Wise’s momentum going on the mound by not allowing a runner to reach base in the eighth or ninth inning. Flach also struck out two hit ters and picked up the save, his second. “And then [Flach], I can’t say enough for him, he just came in and did a great job,” Saul said.
