Options: Students can set prices at ASUO Used Book Swap ■ Continued from Page 1 the Fishbowl. Students will be able to fill out a contract and pick the prices at which to sell their books. The swap will be held during the first week of classes in the EMU lobby. After the first week, students will be able to pick up their money or unsold books at the ASUO office. For books that are sold, there will be a 50-cent charge. “It’s basically putting that power of choice back into the students’ hands and giving them another option,” said Glenda Marshall, ASUO outreach director. An alternative way to buy and sell used books is the Smith Family Bookstore. “A large percentage of our regular stu dents who come here just like shopping at an alternative bookstore,” said Evon Smith, Smith Family Bookstore manager. The Smith Family Bookstore buys books back for around 10 percent to 30 percent of the original cost of the book. ‘‘We buy books based on how much we need the book, as well as the national wholesale rate,” Smith said. "It’s certainly busy and chaotic like it is at the UO book store, but we don’t have those long lines trailing down the stairs like the book store.” Smith said students should compare their prices with the University Bookstore. In addition, students can sell books to the Smith Family Bookstore at any time dur ing the term. "What makes our buying so different is that we are buying books to keep here in our store, so we tend to pay higher than the wholesalers who buy at the UO book store,” Smith said. The University Bookstore offers 60 per cent of the new price for books that will be reused next term. However, the University Bookstore pays 15 to 35 percent for most textbooks that classes will not use again. The prices depend on the wholesale de mand for the used books, including whether the book has a more current edi tion. Students can sell back books at the University Bookstore from March 12 to 22.
