Expert witnesses will be al lowed to make comparisons, but not draw conclusions about what the evidence shows, said U.S. District Judge Richard Matsch. The government wants to use such analyses to link Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols to each other and to the 1995 feder al building bombing. McVeigh’s trial is set to begin March 31. McVeigh’s attorney, Jeralyn Merritt, argued that handwriting, fiber and hair analyses are unre liable and cannot be deemed sci entific evidence. Court finds against ‘junk’ e-mail sender 2 PHILADELPHIA—Computer users who hate ‘junk” e-mail have gotten a break from two fed eral court rulings. Cyber Promotions Inc. of Philadelphia was barred Monday from sending unsolicited e-mail advertisements to the 5 million subscribers of CompuServe Inc. A spokesman for Columbus based CompuServe Inc. said Wednesday unsolicited e-mail concerned its customers because they have to sort through it while paying for their time online. On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Charles R. Weiner of Philadelphia forbid Cyber Promo tions from falsifying e-mail return addresses, which kept America Online members from blocking the messages. Elephant seals find Oregon winter rough 3 CHARLESTON — Another Southern California family fleeing the crowds moves to Ore gon. Nothing new there. Except this family isn’t human. A small group of elephant seals has quietly claimed squatters’ rights on Shell Island, about 500 yards offshore of Cape Arago. As the large penipeds recover from the edge of extinction, the growing population is pushing the seals north. “This extension of the breeding range to Oregon is unlikely to be successful because winter storms wash pups into the ocean before they are capable of independent life,” wrote biologist Jan Hodder in a paper to be published this fall in the scientific journal “Marine Mammal Science.” Navy plane vanishes off coast of Israel 4JERUSALEM — The U.S. Navy suspended its search Wednesday for a military jet that disappeared with four service men aboard during a training ex ercise in the eastern Mediter ranean. The S-3 Viking, stationed on the 6th Fleet’s USS Theodore Roosevelt, dropped off the radar at about 8 p.m. Tuesday, the Navy said in a statement. Search and rescue squads lo cated some debris with squadron markings, said Bert Byers, a Navy spokesman. The military offered no details about possible causes of the crash. The plane disappeared about 90 miles west of the Israeli port city of Haifa. Earthquakes kill at least 72 in Iran towns 5BOJNURD, Iran — Earth quakes and aftershocks rocked northeastern Iran Wednesday, a day after two powerful jolts flat tened villages of mud homes, killing at least 72 people and in juring more than 200. The death toll on state-run Tehran radio has been climbing since two earthquakes shook the city of Bojnurd and surrounding villages Tuesday afternoon, hit ting about 40 minutes apart. Relief workers rushed to most of the stricken villages, but land slides and knee-deep snow blocked roads to some hamlets.
