LETTERS Participate in fight Recently, white supremacists sought to instill fear as they target ed Bethel Temple with swastikas. In light of the firebombing of Im manuel Christian Fellowship in Portland, this is symptomatic of the racial hate that is festering in Oregon. The Race Task Force, a group which provides support and ad vocacy to hate crime victims, con demns this vandalism. Bethel Temple’s multicultural congrega tion has a rich history and a role as provider of spiritual nourish ment, moral leadership and com munity life. It is a powerful insti tution that has given University community members a sense of belonging, hope and guidance. We encourage everyone, religious and non-religious, to respect the role of this institution in the com munity. This tragedy is personal for all of us. Will this malicious act of desecration and disrespect of a people go without a re sponse? Now is the time for us to recip rocate Bethel’s support. Although the graffiti has since been painted over, we call upon University members to engage in the recov ery efforts. Attend a service at Bethel Temple (18th Ave. and Garfield St.) on Sundays at 11 a.m. or include the temple in your prayers and condemn what has happened in your churches and homes. But most importantly, go further than shallow expressions of concern and participate in the fight against racism. Jack Orozco & 2 co-signers Race Task Force Who is at fault? I would like to express my dis gust with tiie lack of intelligence you showed in blaming bicyclists for the theft of their bikes. This sort of “blame the victim” mental ity is just the sort of attitude that impedes the resolution of the bike theft epidemic in the University area. Perhaps people should just leave their bikes at home and dri ve instead? Then they could drive to school, endlessly circling the area, bitching about the lack of parking. And if their expensive cars happen to have the windows smashed in by a radical, anarchist bicycle advocacy group, 1 guess we can blame the car owners for driving expensive cars to school. Tracy A. Scharn Religious Studies Sites forgotten The Internet has been evolving in ways that nobody ever imag ined. Much of this is due to the combined efforts and imagina tions of the millions of people around the world. This medium has given us another tool to allow us an opportunity to access infor mation, explore different coun tries and view other cultures that was never before possible. There are people and issues that I doubt would ever have been heard if it wasn’t for the Net. But as with anything that has a noble begin ning, there are always those who seek to corrupt it. I found myself very disappoint ed with the Web sites you chose concerning what you considered the best of the sports web sites [Jan. 29, ODE). As with many oth er publications, when you decid ed to review sports sites on the In ternet you focused on those sites hosted by some of the most finan cially powerful companies in the business of sports. I saw very few that didn’t have a reporting medi um outside the Net. To clarify my point I am won dering how, when there are an es timated 3,990,586 sites to review on the subjects of sports, you came to the conclusion that these 15 were the best? I own Blue Dia mond Fitness (http://www.blue diamondfitness.com), an online weekly publication dedicated to fitness and health. I try to keep on top of the latest Internet issues and over time have seen how the direction of the Internet, its con tent, and those who are beginning to run it slowly change. In September of 1996,1 went to a seminar about advertising on the Internet in San Francisco hosted by Interactive Media Sales. Speakers included individuals from Netscape, Forester Research, Yahoo, Chiat Day and NBC. The focus of this seminar was on effec tive advertising. One of the major topics covered was the concern many companies had over trying to compete with smaller, and at times more effective, companies on the Internet. The main focus was on over whelming the smaller companies with expensive banner advertis ing so as to literally drive them out of the Internet. The reason that this was a concern to many ad agencies is because when a company such as Sports Illustrat ed purchases a banner ad from Netscape costing them over $10,000 a week, and they are still competing head-to-head with a Web site run by a couple of Uni versity students from back east, a company can get a little nervous about whether or not it’s worth the price. I spoke to Alan Gunshor, asso ciate publisher at Netscape Com munications, about the direction of the Net. I asked about what his feelings were concerning its di rection and the type of industries that would have an advantage. His conclusion: The Net is still up for grabs. Mine: It may still be up for grabs, but there is an effort underway to grab it all. On the flight back from San Francisco, I felt like I had just been at a dismantling convention for the Internet. I realized that what I had just witnessed was an attempt to design a corporate strategy for placing the Internet in a more controlled environment. If this happens, one of the most open and information-rich re sources in the world will be de stroyed. There may always be other sites to visit, but as long as those sites that have the most cash at their disposal are given priori ty coverage by third parties, the public at-large will always have a skewed vision of the Internet.
