Organizers of the Second Annual Psychedelic Halloween Masquerade Ball ask that partygoers “come as (they) aren’t.” “Last time we got some totally wild and bizarre costumes,” said organizer Enda Brennan, attorney and music presenter. “It's a trip.” The Oct. 26 event, which will take place in the Eugene Hilton Ballroom, is not only an opportunity for anx ious costume-lovers to begin the holi : it is also a chance for Jerry Garcia fans to relive the '*1 era through the music of the Dead-® beats, a Grateful Dead tribute band. Their performance, Brennan said, Will be the primary focus of the occa sion. "They are the best Grateful Dead tribuie band I’ve heard, and I’ve heard quite a few,” he said. “If you close your eyes, you would think you were at a Dead show. Of course, no one is Jerry Garcia, but they come pretty close.” Although the Deadbeats will be the featured act of the evening, they only are one of several groups scheduled to perform at the ball. Folk duo Francine and Nymiah i show. According to .- -this duo makes listeners Ice they're listening to an entire choir with their a capella gospel music. The Laura Kemp Band, another folk act, will continue the show. Pele Juju will make an appearance at the ball as well. With a “Wild Women of the World” beat, Brennan said, this band is “totally infectious.” Trillian Green, an instrumental group described as "psycho and wild,” will alsoperform at the event. “The music is practically nonstop from 7:30-2 a.ra„" Brennan said. The Flirtations The Flirtations, self-identified as “the world's first and only politically active, all-gay a cappella vocal group,” will sing at WOW Hall Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. The Flirtations have performed on “Donahue,” “Good Morning, America" and in the Oscar-winning film "Philadel phia." Admission is $8. Lawrence Gallery The Lawrence Gallery will display the works of two artists Oct. 18—Oct. 30. Master YiQian Shu’s watercolors and Gary Lawrence's metal sculptures will be the featured exhibits. "Be There" is a weekly column highlighting the week's top local entertainment events.
