City needs Lee I recently found out Bobby Lee t* running for the Eugene City Council's Ward I the area including the University com munity, Eugene downtown end part* of Coburg Road I cannot express bow enthusiasm t am to see someone with such capabil ity run for this seat taw may be a young candi date, but he eclipses many of us with hi* energy, drive and expe rience in managing governmen tal agencies Lee is visionary in his policy-making lie ha* been on the Oregon State Board of Higher Education, the YMCA board of director* and the [Manned Parenthood board of director* On each he was well known lor his forward-thinking and inclusive approach. Lee'* life Ira* been devoted to public service, and he know* both the theoretical and practi cal implication* of public policy-making, lie* familiar with Eugene's unique character istic* ami problem* and has been studying them for years Let s give Let* a chance to bring his superb skills to the Eugene City Council. Vote Lee for Eugene City Counc il Ward 3 on May 12. March 18), I am baffled by Emerald edi torial policies You cheerfully print a spiteful column by S*mg» Sherwood containing lie* (bicy cling on the sidewalks in Eugene is illegal), distortions (bike commuter* tend to ride $1,000 machines), unfair gener alizations (bicycles belong on bike path*, not on the street), and misplaced idealism (let's just build more hike paths) ostensibly as humor However, when 1 respond in kind, I get censored quicker than Holo caust-revisionist propaganda. The Emerald editorial staff complains of lark of response to some Ermmld columnists' opin ion pieces and fervent response to other* Could It he that the sen ous opinion pieces are generally so trite m to warrant no response* If* general Sv unimportant topics *«« n ».« bicycle* and Thr Cam mtrntatw that produce tnsup portable position*, perhaps because there aren't sufficient opinions out there to parrot If Son|a Sherwood * piec e i« satirical. she may wish to plac e a warning label on future «atm cal piece* such a*.
