■ LETTERS Why here? A renowned social scientist ont c asked in a rather sad tone whether people will do anything for money. This thorny question is what those 1,000 Lane County residents should ask thetnselves before they are hired to work for a South Korean "chaebol” (busi ness conglomerate) called Hyundai The reason South Korean lug business conglomerates want to set up business bases or factories in the American Northwest is nothing but the rising social cost of production in their own coun try For instance, the air and water pollution in South Korea is one of the world's highest. Many environmental si ientists predict that, with the current rate of pollution. South Korea w ill be uninhabitable by the year 2020 It is obvious that the chaebol is trying to avoid being held up for such consequences. Constant traffic gridlock on South Korean highways and local roads gives additional pro duction costs to companies like Hyundai. Statistics show that South Korean trucks and cars waste more fuel during idling than running on the road Fur thermore. average ele< trie hills for South Korean industrialists are about three times those in the United States However, the most serious problem facing Hyundai and other South Kore an firms is the resenting work force While Hyundai’s top exec utives were making deals with tiie Oregon. Lane County and Kugene officials, the Hyundai workers in South Korea decid ed to go out on a total sit-in strike, protesting the company s infamous record of exploiting workers. As the number of non working days increases, the cost Hyundai has to bear will be astronomical. Although South Korean work ers would happily work for more than Cl hours a day for less than $20,000 a year (a pro posed yearly salary for those 1,000 potential workers).
