Folk Festival 3L-----—-. counrtsv t+wo Babes With Axes are (clockwise from top left) Laura Kemp, Katie Henry, Debbie Dtedrich and T R Kelley Each of the members also pursues a solo career Babes With Axes to celebrate release of new CD at folk fest our folk musicians pursue their individual solo careers I while they also join torces to create a band together When Babes With Axes began, some people had doubts But the band gathered together despite all that and has persevered Debbie Diedrich, Katie Henry, T R Kelley and Laura Kemp played together at the WOW Hall for the first time at a talent show sponsored by Northwest Music News, called "First Thursday," in December 1993 “{The concert promoter! gave us Shis slot. He didn't think that we'd be able to fill up the WOW Hall,' Kemp said, “A concert promoter wanted us to open for The Strangers because he a.is afraid four singer-song writing women could not fill the house, couldn't break even," Diedrich added. uui me oana reiusea to open and got the entire night to them selves They were well-received and puiied in a substantial crowd “It was the best First Thursday the WOW Hall crowd had seen," Kemp said. After that concert, the band was off lo a great start Still going strong a year later. Babes With A*es put on a one-year anniversary concert at the WOW Hall. The concert was recorded live, in hopes of some day transforming the magic onto a CD The CD is no longer just a dream The Babes will be playing Friday night at 7 p m at the Willamette Valley Folk Festival. At the festival they will have copies of their new release, WOW Live Babes', which will also be avail able at local record stores The band will perform selections from the CD and will also play a few new tunes to the fans' ears "The CD is a chronicle of one night — two shows." Henry said. At the same time, each musician has her own career, which includes indi vidual studio recordings, perfor mances, music and styles. Each Babe pedorms locally on a consistent basis Babes With Axes plays individual members' songs, but the songs have a spe cially unique sound when played without accompaniment "These different abilities make for good instrumentation," Henry said "The solo career gives the opportunity to flesh out material and push out into other opportu nities." The group's musical differences, including approaches to songwnt mg, the relationship of lyres and music, structure and reasons for writing, makeup the uniqueness of each individual They also con tribute to the group's success The Babes will be presenting a songwntmg seminar on Saturday at 3 p m. In the EMU Ben Linder Room, and they will explain these differences and techniques in more detail And be sure to come to the opening night of the Willamette Valley Folk Festival and hear Babes With Axes.
