Debbie Diedrich, Katie Henry,
T R Kelley and Laura Kemp
played together at the WOW Hall
for the first time at a talent show
sponsored by Northwest Music
News, called "First Thursday," in
December 1993
“{The concert promoter! gave us
Shis slot. He didn't think that we'd
be able to fill up the WOW Hall,'
Kemp said,
“A concert promoter wanted us
to open for The Strangers because
he a.is afraid four singer-song
writing women could not fill the
house, couldn't break even,"
Diedrich added.
uui me oana reiusea to open
and got the entire night to them
selves They were well-received
and puiied in a substantial crowd
“It was the best First Thursday
the WOW Hall crowd had seen,"
Kemp said.
After that concert, the band was
off lo a great start Still going strong
a year later. Babes With A*es put
on a one-year anniversary concert
at the WOW Hall. The concert was
recorded live, in hopes of some
day transforming the magic onto
a CD
The CD is no longer just a
dream The Babes will be playing
Friday night at 7 p m at the
Willamette Valley Folk Festival. At
the festival they will have copies
of their new release, WOW Live
Babes', which will also be avail
able at local record stores The
band will perform selections from
the CD and will also play a few
new tunes to the fans' ears
"The CD is a chronicle of one
night — two shows." Henry said.
"It's a gift to our fans," Diedrich

Kelley said WOW Live Babes!
was economically more feasible to
record live than in the studio Also,
Babes With A*es is a performing
band, and this recording reflects
that idea
“SUve) captures the energy on
the stage," Kelley said
Each Babe has “different simi
larities" in styles of writing and
singing, which represent every
one's work as a group. At the
same time, each musician has her
own career, which includes indi
vidual studio recordings, perfor
mances, music and styles.
Each Babe pedorms locally on
a consistent basis Babes With
Axes plays individual members'
songs, but the songs have a spe
cially unique sound when played
without accompaniment
"These different abilities make
for good instrumentation," Henry
said "The solo career gives the
opportunity to flesh out material
and push out into other opportu
nities."
The group's musical differences,
including approaches to songwnt
mg, the relationship of lyres and
music, structure and reasons for
writing, makeup the uniqueness of
each individual They also con
tribute to the group's success
The Babes will be presenting a
songwntmg seminar on Saturday
at 3 p m. In the EMU Ben Linder
Room, and they will explain these
differences and techniques in more
detail
And be sure to come to the
opening night of the Willamette
Valley Folk Festival and hear
Babes With Axes. Celebrate the
release of the Babes' new CD and
celebrate the muse
