Cake >s a band that rs building a foi lowing throughout northern California If you have not heard Cake's music live or even heard of the band at all, don't worry Now >s your chance, with the group's new release. Motorcade of Gen erosity The music on the CD is slight ly challenging to its iabe- which is how Cake likes it the musi cians do not want to lima their music to any specific genre The band consists of players on gyi tar, bass, trumpet, drums and vocals, and tbe music is inter esting to listen to But do not be misled into thinking the sound is remotely similar to the Daddies or the like, it is not -Though I had not hon'd of !' s group before, I was happy to discover Cake is not another band aimed at tbe college audi ence, which is assumed to enjoy only music of smashed melodies jumbled with obnoxious noise Yet it is not exactly the music I imagined it would be, either The CD contains a low-quality CAKE Mworcdilc of Generosity SiudKJ sound I nave no! figured out it that is due lo the stu dio >t was recorded m Of the band 'hat record ' studio No matter whtch it is, l have decided that the musicians need to do some tme tuning on then music I enjoy some of trie songs But unfortunatety. the musicians give me the impression they have not practiced together often enough to complement one another's playing styles An example of this s the song 'Up So Dose." which has ait the instruments previously men tioned combining then efforts but not complementing them The guitarists offer a nice bacfc ground rhythm with a funky solo occasionally heard Then the trumpet player jumps m And though the timing of its entrance is relatively on track, the solo is simple Too simple The effort ts being limit ed. instead of expanded, for the listener Do not misunderstand me, the trumpet sounds great in •his tune But it nether comple ments the ongoing rhythms, nor does it mu m much of its own creative juices The majority Of the tyncs are simple. tx> deep tfxxrght * nec ossary to decipher most ot t>e words And a few actuary pro ■ txiity to relate to the fynost's muscatiy-defined experiences Irootcaily. if the music is either very oddheat and fuoktsh or very lacking, the words appear CH.it ot nowhere with great mean ing So it is hard tor the listener to dislike some or most of the CD where it lacks m certain places, it compensates in other spots ! am not saying this CD is an excellent one.
