Tho institute is undor tho co-direction of College of Edm ation A shim into Doan tit H Walker Pxec.u tin- Director John Hold and Associate Dirts tor Jt-ff Sprague of tho Specialized Training Program, a com ponent within the Center on Human Development According to the proposal for establishment, the institute's mission is to "empower si hoots and social service agencies to address violence and destrut live behavior, at the point of school entry and beyond, in order to ensure safety and to facil itate the academic achievement and healthy social development of children and youth “ This is a combination of community, campus and state efforts to research violence and destrut, live behavior among children and youth. According to the proposal outlining the insti tute's focus, violence 011 urs in a range of situa tions such as homes, schools, neighborhoods and communities and is expressed through the at tivi ties of gangs, juvenile and adult criminals and domestic abusers "Violence, juvenile crime, and gang activits threaten to overwhelm our schools, which are no longer the safe havens they out « were in which students are free to learn and develop," act ording the titutl | irupns.il.
