Love trio to play Afro!Celtic tunes Although most musicians begin their professional careers in smoky bars, dark taverns, holiday fairs or busy street corners, Laura Love began her musical career in jail Born in Lincoln. Love started singing jazz and pop tunes at the Nebraska State Pen itentiary at age 16 Today she is the vocalist, songwriter and bassist of the Laura Love Trio which will perform at the Willamette Valley Folk Festival at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Fusing African and Caribbean rhythms with traditional acoustic instruments and captivating har monies, the band will be playing a style of music they term Afro/Celtic, a press release said Acclaimed for its powerful rhythm and exceptional vocals, Love's band has performed at venues across the Northwest and in many cities throughout the United States. The band was also a supporting act for performers such as Lyle Lovett, John Lee Hooker, Beausoleil, America, Bo Diddley, Karla Bonoff, Two Nice Girls and Elayne Boosler. "Love adds ... a keen sense of rhythm and, on some songs, what can only be described as a sort of African, Bulgarian, Appalachian yodel which is truly impressive," said a review in Dirty Linen. “Her voice, in combi nation with the strength and social and political awareness of her songwriting, sets Love far above the ever-growing stable of modern day female singer-song writers." Before the formation of the band, Love seasoned a variety of career experiences and changes The daughter of Preston Love, v/ho played alto saxophone with Count Basie, Wynome “Mr Blue" Harris and Johnny Otis. Love moved on from jails to performing at clubs and colleges, incorporat ing her musical roots into a dis tinctive vocal and bass style, a press release said After years of performing a spectrum of musical styles. Love settled in Seattle and became a founding member of Boom Boom G.l . a grunge-blues outfit.
