Love trio to play Afro!Celtic tunes
Although most musicians
begin their professional
careers in smoky bars,
dark taverns, holiday fairs or busy
street corners, Laura Love began
her musical career in jail
Born in Lincoln. Ore . Love
started singing jazz and pop
tunes at the Nebraska State Pen
itentiary at age 16 Today she is
the vocalist, songwriter and
bassist of the Laura Love Trio
which will perform at the
Willamette Valley Folk Festival at
6 p.m. on Sunday.
Fusing African and Caribbean
rhythms with traditional acoustic
instruments and captivating har
monies, the band will be playing
a style of music they term
Afro/Celtic, a press release said
Acclaimed for its powerful
rhythm and exceptional vocals,
Love's band has performed at
venues across the Northwest and
in many cities throughout the
United States. The band was also
a supporting act for performers
such as Lyle Lovett, John Lee
Hooker, Beausoleil, America, Bo
Diddley, Karla Bonoff, Two Nice
Girls and Elayne Boosler.
"Love adds ... a keen sense of
rhythm and, on some songs,
what can only be described as a
sort of African, Bulgarian,
Appalachian yodel which is truly
impressive," said a review in
Dirty Linen. “Her voice, in combi
nation with the strength and
social and political awareness of
her songwriting, sets Love far
above the ever-growing stable of
modern day female singer-song
writers."
Before the formation of the
band, Love seasoned a variety of
career experiences and changes
The daughter of Preston Love,
v/ho played alto saxophone with
Count Basie, Wynome “Mr Blue"
Harris and Johnny Otis. Love
moved on from jails to performing
at clubs and colleges, incorporat
ing her musical roots into a dis
tinctive vocal and bass style, a
press release said
After years of performing a
spectrum of musical styles. Love
settled in Seattle and became a
founding member of Boom Boom
G.l . a grunge-blues outfit.

Hailed as one ol the best and
reproached as one of the worst
bands to ever perform in Seattle,
one critic said Love was wasting
her considerable talent on an
"annoying pointless" band
Love reflected on these words
and decided to begin writing her
own music. The outcome is a
magnificent blend of rhythm and
vocals that is influenced by ethnic
and American roots.
Later, when the band formed,
Love reaped favorable criticism,
success and recognition for her
powerful and riveting music
Since Love and the band
released two albums, Pangaea
and Z Therapy (on Love's own
recording label. Octoroon Biogra
phy) her music is broadcast to
college and public radio listeners
throughout North America
The band's appearance at the
folk festival is the latest addition
to their festival resume Some of
the many prestigious festivals
they performed in include the
Canmore Heritage Fostival in
Alberta, Canada, the Peter Britt
Festival in Jacksonville, Ore ;
Bumbershoot Festival of The Arts
in Seattle, Columbia Folk Festival
in Spokane. Wash ; Summer
Music Festival in McCall, Idaho,
and The Michigan Womyn's
