EDITORIAL Is there room for two in the White House? Hillary Clinton lias played a very influential role in ih(! Whin* House It seems her influence, or her need to influence, is becoming a runaway train Although she may be qualified to perform the tasks that she has i re ated for herself, it seems the rest of the White House isn't. "It's hard to run a White House with nobody in charge," said a friend of the Clintons. "It's espet ially hard to run the White House with nobody in charge and two presidents." Hillary has moved into the White House and has tak on on a role unlike any other first lady in history To accomplish her tasks she has brought personal troops along with her. many of whom are people who have been deeply ingrained in Clinton history and some are even i ailed close friends Now it seems the fear of the others working in the While House is jeopardizing inter mil relationships. "No one wants to toll Hill or uspe< ially Hillary that they can’t do things the way they're used to doing them." said .i top administrative official, "And so mam ut these people around are old friends that y ou can't itist break into the < ircie Some of the old friends and rei mils have questioned the integrity of their appointments Of course there is Bernard Nussbaum yvho resigned Friday. Vincent VV f oster [r Nussbaum's deputy who committed.suit id>' last summer; and the ,\sso< iate Attorney Cenerai Web ster I liubiiel. yvho undoubtedly yvill have his hands full for quite some time as the Whiteyvafei scandal con tinues to be unveiled. All three men had one thing in common recruited by Hillary from the Hose I„m Firm of I.itlle Rock, the same law firm that Hillary herself yvorked for. “The senior staff nlway s fears crossing a first lady." said Marlin Fitzrvater. former press sei rotary for Presi dent Ceorge Hush and spokesman for President Ronald Reagan. "Partly it's respect for the offu o of tlu* first lady Partly its a man-woman thing You're afraid that when she's home yv itli the president, she'll repeat the charges against you every night for the rest of your life." The working relationships within the White House must become cohesive or serious barriers already form ing will become impossible to break down. If the first lady 's rob- is going to encompass as much as Hillary’s, then the neressai v framework must support it The prob lem has risen simply because it has not existed before and people are hay mg trouble making room for it She is taking a path and forging ahead alone But her agenda and the president's aren't complementing each other, instead they re making them more difficult, llillaiv Clinton has proved to be a very poyverful woman I'here need-, to be a plan of .iltai k prior to the .ittac k. and the plan has yet to be unveiled. She yvas not voted into a politic al oftii e She does not even have an offic ial title. The name first lady has simply been hand ed down through history. try to find it in the Constitu tion. When Hill Clinton yvas elected by the people and for the people, so yvas his wife, and maybe her name should have been on the ballot as well.
