Affirmative action office procedures under review By Mandy Baucum £m« aid Reporter A specialist from tho Office of Fedors! Contract Compliance Program Is schod ultui to conduct a compliance review of tho University's Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity today Everett Wells, director of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity, said that us fur ns he knows, the reviow Is not he ing conducted because of complaints. The OFCCP's job is to look Into affairs und evaluate the success or failure of equal opportunity procedures through out the nation. It is not known how long the Unlvor slty review will take The OPOCP will bo examining the ex tent of Affirmative Action's compliance with its Moral rules by assessing the University's hiring and treatment prac tices on the basis of disability, gender, race, volorun status, age and citizenship "(The OI-'CCP specialist) is auditing our policies and procedures to toe if we am Inadvertently discriminating in our policies." Wells said. Peter Keyes of the OFGCP sold the purpose of the review Is confidential and tfuil the OKXP can give no further information until after the review has been executed. Wells did not uppeur concerned by the coming review ond seemed eager to gel an outside opinion on the Universi ty* current affirmative action program "Wo think our hiring practices are nouirol. but wo are Immersed in the policies every day," Wells said, "so we don't see things that (the specialist) might." Wells said ho didn't want to oversim plify the University's current hiring practices, but hu did address the stigma that the University must fulfill minority quotas set by the government. "Wo don't have a fixed number wo must hire by a certain dote Quotas are illegal.'' Wells said "Wo have goals and timetables There are no penalties for goals and timetables, but there are pen alties lor not trying to roach those goals." One of those goals is trying to increase the amount of underrepresented appli cants for University jobs Because the University recruits most of Its faculty nationwide, the applicant pool could be greatly increased within such a large market. Wells said he has been trying to set up a briefing session with ASUO president Jennifer Bills and Bobby Leo, ASUO president-elect, to have an open forum for students who wish to ask questions. GROUPS Continued from Page 3 pledging process is longer than many oilier traditional greet or ganizations and sometimes lasts as long as two terms Before women can join, Ihoy must do community service work, have several letters of recommendation and take tests, among other things. Lawrence said. Another way the University's predominantly hlack greet or ganizations are different than predominantly white fraterni ties and sororities Is that they don't have houses. The black groups can't get houses because their numbers are too low, iiut Lawrence said she doesn't mind. "Our bond goes for beyond whether we live together," she said "This way. we make a special effort to get together." Senior J-]uy Lincoln, one of two University members of Al phu I’hl Alpha, said he would like to see his fraternity eventu ally get a house, but lie realizes that may take a while. "It would bo nice if we could 'ft's a sisterhood for life. It’s a bond you can’t put into words. After I graduate, I’ll be part of a graduate Alpha chapter, and the commitment will continue.’ Lisa Lawrence, Alpha Kappa Alpha member "It would bo nice if wo could recruit enough African Ameri cans on this campus,” he said. Many of the black fraternities and sororities meet weekly at thc iiM IJ or at members' homos Some work out of the filack Student Union. University black greek organ izations' parties arts also a lot different than those gi.un by their predominantly white counterparts. For example, this black frater nitios nnd sororities never serve alcohol al their social func tions. In addition, the groups often use proceeds from parties to fund volunteer projects. No black greok organizations are members of the ln torfrutcrnlty or Panhellonic councils. While each group has differ ent reasons for not joining the councils, most say they value their Independence. The black fraternities and so rorities starts! their own uni fied organization last term, called the Bluck Creek Coali tion. One apparent drawback to joining a University black fra ternity or sorority is that those organizations don't have a lot of members here. But most black greok mem bers say they don't mind. "I've got sisters all around the world,” Beatty said. "I know they're there. I don't need them in my face."
