.Entertainment Film nuggets hide amidst video store waste By Ken Nolan Emerald Contributor Following is a four-star movie rating system: * * * * — Excellent * * * Good * * Fair * — Poor The video store can offer a night of entertainment or a .Movies on Video. night of torture depending on the movie selected for view ing Here is a list of some of this month's new releases on video some to rent and some to avoid. Monkey Shines * * * This highly suspenseful and original thriller about the psy chological relationship be tween a quadriplegic man and his servant monkey is pure en tertainment from start to finish. Although some of the punch of the film mav be diminished on a small screen, this overlooked horror sleeper will provide ac tion. ( hills, and fun long after Rewards abound for informed renters the "eject" button is pressed. Colors * * * A film about gang warfare in I. A . "Colors" is gritty, taut, and ex plosive Although flawed in that it is basic ally a rehash of every young-cop. old-cop film ever made, it rises above medi ocrity due mostly to the iron grip director Dennis Hopper holds on the pace of the movie The film also has terrific per formances by Sean Penn and Robert Duvall, which alone jus tify the film's rental "Colors" is gutsy enough to la- extremely violent in its depiction of the battle between cops and gangs, making it impossible to he am thing less than brutal. The film is not for the slight of heart, and the action is riveting and relentless. Young Guns No Stars This Hollywood fashion show of youth without talent is a dis grace to Westerns A hum drum. predictable nose-pic ker. the inane plot leads this film into the stable to rest Charlie Sheen looks like a stock broker in a cowboy suit, and is just one of the unconvincing ado lescents to appear in this burnt turkey This film is a vehicle for easy ticket sales with gig gling twelve year-old girls and should la' avoided like a dead skunk on the highway funny farm * * * * This overlooked, underrated and hi lariously funny comedy was lauded bv critics and thrown to the wolves by the public Star ring Chevy Chase in his funni est role in several years. "Fun ny Farm" proves that a sub lime. subtle comedy can lie much more effective than the typical "one-liner" comedies churned out by Hollywood and devoured bv viewers each month This is ,i movie that gets funnier every time it is viewed This month's Forgotten Treasure (culled from great movies tucked away in the fur thest corners of y ideo stores) is EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT CHANGING THE WORLD. THIS YEAR 3750 PEOPLE WIL ACTUALLY DO IT Not everyone is cut out to change the world After all, it takes education, skills and a spare two years Also a willingness to work Hard This year 3.750 Americans will join the Peace Corps to do just that They'll do things like build roads, plant forests and crops, teach English, develop small businesses, train community health workers, or even coach basketball However, what they’ll be doing isn’t half as important as the fact that they'll be changing a little piece of the world. . . for the better And when they return, these 3.750 Americans will find that experience doing hard work will have another benefit It's exactly what their next employers are looking for.
