Filming begins Monday James Brolin of ABC-TV's "Hotel" will appear in a starring role, along with his son Josh, in a story about a young athlete's de termination to succeed in track and his eventual downfall brought about by steroid use, said Allison Liddi, promotions director. "He uses steroids after col lapsing under the pressure" of competing against runners who are of superior ability, Liddi said. Liddi said the movie, directed by John Nicolella, focuses on the relationship between the runner and his father. She drew comparisons to an anti-nuclear weapons film cur rently in the works with Martin and Charlie Sheen. 'Interesting things happen when you have children. You look beyond yourself," Liddi said. Liddi also spoke of the mov ie's strong anti-drug message, supported by Josh Brolin's feel ings on the subject and Norman Morrill's "exceptionally well written" screenplay. Liddi said about 100 people from Eugene auditioned for var ious parts, but the main draw from the campus area will be the thousands of extras needed at Hayward Field from 7 a.m. to dusk on Oct. 8. The extras will not be paid, but raffle prizes will be given away all day long, including a color television, a compact disc player and a mountain bike. Free donuts and coffee will be avail able, and the first 500 partici pants will receive "The Finish Line T-shirts. A secret prize also will be given away during the final hour of shooting. "When you do a movie in New York City or Los Angeles you don't get treated this way," and the company wants local residents to know their help is appreciated and the town is a great place to film, Liddi said. Phoenix Television Produc tions Inc., the production com pany, also will be filming build ing interiors at Oregon State University. Fifty members of the cast and crew already have ar rived in Eugene, Liddi said. Liddi was enthusiastic about her experiences in Eugene. 'It's like finding innocence again," she said. 'The Finish Line" is produced by Stan Brooks, and executive producer Ccraid Abrams. Film ing will continue in Eugene until sometime in the middle of Octo ber, and the finished product will air on KOZY-TV. Jones’ new album connects emotions By Rick Heyman Emerald Contributor Marti Jones — Used Guitars Jones ami producer Don Dix on (RJ5.M,, Smithereens, Mar shall Crenshaw) have crafted the perfect showcase for Jones' talents. Used Guitars is a vehi cle for Jones' singing and Dix on's exquisitely rich production sense. The songs are mostly from outside writers, but Jones' singing has matured consider ably — before she sang prettily, now she connects emotionally in a way that claims these songs as her own. Without that abili ty, cover singers are superflu ous. Dixon's arrangements streamline the music without sacrificing his signature produc tion style. All this adds up to one of my favorite albums of the year. Crowded House — The Tem ple of Low Men I'm trying as hard as I can to keep the critical overkill in check, but I can't think of a re cord demonstrating such as tounding melodic and lyrical talents since (dare I say it?) the Beatles. With not one weak song on either side, and with equal adeptness at up-tempo songs and ballads, brignt melo dies and haunting ones, it's hard to call this record anything but a masterpiece. Paul Kelly — Under the Sun l still stand by my statement from last spring that this guy is the new Elvis Costello. His pro lific writing, wit and ability to write remarkably interesting lyrics make that comparison equally apt for Under the Sun. It's well worth checking out. Graham Parker — The Mona Lisa's Sister Parker's releases get such lit tle notice that with each new one, it's easy to say he's writing better than ever. Hey, he's been writing better than ever for years, but he seems to have reached his peak with critics around 1979 and he has never really sold many records. Park er and longtime sidekick Brinsley Schwarz took over the production reins with excellent results —• the record is warm and bright, especially playing up Parker's acoustic guitar and his voice. The writing is uni formly superb and the perform ances (unlike a couple of his early '80s records) are inspired. Bob Dylan — Down in the Groove I'll admit my bias — I love al most everything Bob Dylan has recorded. Musically, his career ebbed with Saved, but since then, in my humble opinion, he's produced some really terrific records. Down in the Croovc is a bit quizzical in that about half of Turn to Records, Page 13 Why was mankind given the delight ( of the heavens? Ambrosia!
