Rooted in the traditional style, the five members of Fox fire combine razor-sharp vocals and innovative arrangements with warm-hearted humor to bring audiences an exciting and entertaining musical experience. Balafon_ The balafon is an African marimba with a single row of tuned wooden bars and gourd resonators with membrane buzzers. Balafon is a five-piece African style marimba ensemble perfor ming original arrangements of African, Latin and Caribbean music. Founded in Corvallis in 1981, Balafon plays on its own self-styled hardwood bass, baritone, tenor-altos and soprano marimbas. Much of the band's music is based directly on mbira music and mbira ensembles from the Shona people in Zimbabwe, Africa. Balafon also combines African marimba music with Latin and Caribbean melodies adapted to marimba, forming a unique marimba sound. The band features three vocalists with the instrumenta tion of violin, mandolin, guitar and bass. Audiences often res pond to their music by dancing, singing along and joining in the fun as the Swing Beans perform a variety of “Bean Personalities and lead them through the world of Swing Bean mythology. Sam Weis Hit name is Sam Weis and she’s a truly uni que singer-songwriter and an exciting, articulate twelve string guitarist. Her music is a fusion of lyrical depth, intense rhythm and layers of finger-picked har monies; a union of her roik ’n’ roll roots and acoustic music in fluences. Weis pulls it all together with great wit and sincerity. Nationally, Weis has shared concert hills with John Fahey and Leo Kottke. Tim Ryan_ Country, Old Time, Delta, classic, bot tleneck, fingerpicking — Tim Ryan plays the blues with an originality rooted in the traditional music of the black rural south. Having cut his teeth in the Los Angeles and New York City folk scenes in the early ’60s, Ryan has shared the stage with such diverse talents as David Lindley, John Hartford and Rosalie Sorrels. The Northern Broadcasters The Northern Broad casters play tunes in a variety of traditional styles, including fiddle tunes from the Southern Ap palachians, Georgia, Mississip pi, the Ozarks and cajun tunes from Louisiana. Beginning as a weekly bluegrass jam session in 1976, the 10-12 member band includes three of the original members. This is their second folk festival appearance.
