Foxfire
Spirituals, contemporary
rock, reggae, cowboy,
western swing and Irish
are not the kinds of music usual
ly associated with your typical
bluegrass band, but Foxfire
plays them all with refreshing
versatility.
Rooted in the traditional
style, the five members of Fox
fire combine razor-sharp vocals
and innovative arrangements
with warm-hearted humor to
bring audiences an exciting and
entertaining musical experience.
Balafon_
The balafon is an African
marimba with a single
row of tuned wooden
bars and gourd resonators with
membrane buzzers.
Balafon is a five-piece African
style marimba ensemble perfor
ming original arrangements of
African, Latin and Caribbean
music. Founded in Corvallis in
1981, Balafon plays on its own
self-styled hardwood bass,
baritone, tenor-altos and
soprano marimbas.
Much of the band's music is
based directly on mbira music
and mbira ensembles from the
Shona people in Zimbabwe,
Africa.
Balafon also combines
African marimba music with
Latin and Caribbean melodies
adapted to marimba, forming a
unique marimba sound.
Balafon will perform Satur
day, May 21 at 5 p.m.

Swing Beans
Swing Beans add a warm
sense of humor and a
refreshing acoustic
string-band sound to its swing
style original and classic
melodies.
The band features three
vocalists with the instrumenta
tion of violin, mandolin, guitar
and bass. Audiences often res
pond to their music by dancing,
singing along and joining in the
fun as the Swing Beans perform
a variety of “Bean Personalities
and lead them through the
world of Swing Bean
mythology.
Sam Weis
Hit name is Sam Weis
and she’s a truly uni
que singer-songwriter
and an exciting, articulate
twelve string guitarist. Her
music is a fusion of lyrical
depth, intense rhythm and
layers of finger-picked har
monies; a union of her roik ’n’
roll roots and acoustic music in
fluences. Weis pulls it all
together with great wit and
sincerity. Nationally, Weis has
shared concert hills with John
Fahey and Leo Kottke.
Tim Ryan_
Country, Old Time,
Delta, classic, bot
tleneck, fingerpicking
— Tim Ryan plays the blues
with an originality rooted in the
traditional music of the black
rural south.
Having cut his teeth in the
Los Angeles and New York City
folk scenes in the early ’60s,
Ryan has shared the stage with
such diverse talents as David
Lindley, John Hartford and
Rosalie Sorrels.
The Northern Broadcasters
The Northern Broad
casters play tunes in a
variety of traditional
styles, including fiddle tunes
from the Southern Ap
palachians, Georgia, Mississip
pi, the Ozarks and cajun tunes
from Louisiana.
Beginning as a weekly
bluegrass jam session in 1976,
the 10-12 member band includes
three of the original members.
This is their second folk festival
appearance.
