Some responded well, and some didn't. Turnovers plagued the Ducks all night. Oregon turned the ball over on three of their first four possessions, had 18 at halftime, and finished the game with 23. On the down side, the junior point guard committed seven turnovers. Oregon played tentative in the first half, as the Ducks con tinued to miss easy shots inside. Everette Stephens. Purdue’s senior point guard, scored nine of his teams' first 11 points as the Boilermakers jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead. The 6-foot-2 spark plug hit two three-point shots in the half, his second giving Purdue a :»4-14 lead. Oregon was already in the coffin waiting for the final nail. Ryan Berning's three-pointer widened the margin to 43-16, and whatever chance Oregon might have had disappeared when Keith Balderston, the Ducks' starting forward, went down with a sprained ankle with 5:50 remaining in the first half. Balderston left with four points and did not return. Richard Lucas, a 6-7 freshman from Anaheim. Calif., replaced Balderston in the se cond half for the Ducks, who left the court at halftime trailing 47-23. Four players scored in double-figures for the Boiler makers. while three Oregon starters (Randy Grant. Greg Senior, and Rick Osborn) were held scoreless. “Obviously, we’re a little disappointed in our perfor mance. YVe knew going in we had to handle their pressure, and we didn't handle it at all," said Oregon coach Don Monson in a post-game wire service in terview. “To me, there's no ex cuse for some of the defense we played and some of the tur novers we committed.''
