Fortunately, two campus wide services offer a variety of healthy, economical meals: the University Housing Department and the Erb Memorial Union Food Service. ‘‘It's pretty good.” com mented Chris Galbraith, a freshman physics major, about housing department meals, which feed most dorm Students in three residence hall dining areas. "Why eat anywhere else when the food is paid for at the dorms?" Dining hall meal tickets for non-residents are available at $3 for breakfast. $4 for lunch and $6 for dinner Meal combinations here come together at the student's discre tion in smorgasbord fashion to satisfy individual tastes. Elected student representatives from each hall attend food ad visory committee meetings, where they convey ideas, recipes and complaints to those who coordinate the? meals. Hammy's provides a "meal in lieu of a meal,” for students on the run. according to Klva Koepp, food service assistant director. On the menu at Hammy's are hamburgers, fries, hot dogs and other fast food favorites. Although recently closed for remodeling. Hammy's reopen ed for business earlier this week Another service that has been closed but will open the even ing of Oct, 9 for Moore Hall residents is the Moore dining hall "restaurant.” located in the Bean Complex. The Moore dining hall pro vides nightly sit-down meals for about 60 students on a rotating basis between different halls. Dinars at Moore are served the meal of their choice. The Moore facility will be ser ving on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Besides these services, the housing department also caters special events and field trips taken by members of the halls, and it coordinates the football training food table for Universi ty football players who require special diets. The EMU Food Service pro vides a wide range of choices in the facilities it operates, expan ding considerably since its in ception in the 1950s. Although business was slow early on. the service has become more popular in the past ten years. And operational costs are l>eing covered, according to EMU Food Service Director Duane Partain. Since the EMU Food Service doesn't receive any compensa tion from the University, it relies entirely on the patron's support, and therefore tries to meet the needs and demands of the students it serves, he said. The first food service area opened in the EMU, the Foun tain Court Cafe, still operates, offering a wide variety of grilled foods and Mexican specialties. Around the corner from the Fountain Court Cafe is the Fishbowl Deli, featuring a delicatessen, frozen desserts, beverages and pastries. "1 come here quite often to get something to drink," said Espen Dahlen. an economics major from Norway. Dahlen said he usually eats at home because the food is cheaper and better. However, the prices at the Fishbowl seem “reasonable," he said, adding it "appears to be quite a popular place.” Doughnuts, coffee, ice cream and other pastries can also be purchased at the Breezway Cafe, which is located on the bottom level of the EMU. For those who need to take a break from the hectic schedule of college life, there is the Beer Cardens on Friday evenings This is the only facility of its kind on a college campus in Oregon. Open Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. • Beer Gardens: Beer and live music. Open Fridays from 4-7 p.m. • EMU Food Service Vans: Sandwiches, pastries and beverages. One parks near Gilbert Hall on 13th Avenue, the other next to the Univer sity Library off of Kincaid Street. Open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. • Skylight Refectory: Oriental take-out.
