Oregon to participate in Citizen Bee academic competition By Sean Nelson Emerald Contributor High school students will have an opportunity to test their knowledge and earn scholar ships when Oregon joins 22 other states participating in the National Close Up Foundation's Citizen Bee academic competi tion this lune, according to Secretary of State Barbara Roberts. The program first began in 1982. l-ast year 17 states par ticipated in the program, accor ding to Donnella Slayton, spokeswoman for the Secretary of State's office. Roberts announced the forma tion of a statewide steering com mittee that will direct activities, and administer both regional and state competitions and awards at a press conference held Oct. 1. The competitions offer high school students an opportunity to test their knowledge of American history, government. economics, geography and cur rent events at local, regional, state and national competitions. Roberts said. Roberts will spend the next four months enlisting the aid of corporate sponsors to assist with funding for student scholarships and travel ex penses to the national competition. The national competition will be held in June 1<)RH in Washington D.C., according to Slayton. Regional and state competitions will also be held, in which a panel of judges will administer questions and answers to participants. To prepare for this competi tion students work on subjects for a year, she said. Subjects in clude the judicial system, government, history, geographv and current affairs, she added After following a program of government studies, students are then administered tests by the judges to determine who will receive the scholarships. The Citizen Bee program is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State, the National Kducation Foundation, the American Federation of Teachers, the Na tional Association of Sec ondary School Principals and other educational groups.
