LTD furnishes accessible transit By Sean Nelson Of U» Kmcralii Riders of the Lane Transit District bus system will find that it offers services that go beyond the traditional fare and scheduling commonly associated with public transportation. “LTD is a fully accessible tran sit system with a wheelchair lift," according to Kd Bergeron, marketing administrator for the firm. "It is the first transit system in the IJ.S. which has an ac cessible ridership that is the highest in the nation,” he added. Space is available for two wheelchairs on all of the buses. Bergeron said. "There is also space on each bus to accommodate two bicy cle racks," he pointed out. More than two bicycles can be held on the aisles of the bus. he said. Other services to disabled riders include a teletypewriter like machine, called a TDD, or Telecommunications Device for the Deaf, which is capable of receiving typed out questions from those unable to speak or hear. The rider types in his or her question, which is received by the TDD. and the secretary or staffer types an answer which is picked up on the other end by the rider's terminal, Bergeron said. “We are also happy to pro vide bus information for the blind in braille at our own ex pense,” he added Buses run seven days a week and provide service "within three blocks of 85 percent of the households in the Eugene Springfield area,” Bergeron said. Information about routes and timetables may be found at all Seven-Eleven stores. First In terstate Banks, the EMU Main Desk and the University Bookstore, he added. “One of the most important aspects of the LTD bus system is its service to University students, staff and faculty." Bergeron said. “The administrative staff of LTD has a commitment to serv ing the University,” he said. "The University and LCC repre sent 40 to 45 percent of our total ridership, and 90 percent of our staff are graduates of the University." he said. LTD provides direct service to both the University and Sacred Heart Hospital. Bergeron said. "Literally, we’ve got the University surrounded,” he added. Buses run to the University and all points of Eugene. Bergeron said. "The service is also good for off-campus students who need to get to the University." he added.
