Riders of the Lane Transit
District bus system will find
that it offers services that go
beyond the traditional fare and
scheduling commonly
associated with public
transportation.
“LTD is a fully accessible tran
sit system with a wheelchair
lift," according to Kd Bergeron,
marketing administrator for the
firm.
"It is the first transit system
in the IJ.S. which has an ac
cessible ridership that is the
highest in the nation,” he
added.
Space is available for two
wheelchairs on all of the buses.
Bergeron said.
"There is also space on each
bus to accommodate two bicy
cle racks," he pointed out.
More than two bicycles can be
held on the aisles of the bus. he
said.
Other services to disabled
riders include a teletypewriter
like machine, called a TDD, or
Telecommunications Device for
the Deaf, which is capable of
receiving typed out questions
from those unable to speak or
hear. The rider types in his or
her question, which is received
by the TDD. and the secretary or
staffer types an answer which is
picked up on the other end by
the rider's terminal, Bergeron
said.
“We are also happy to pro
vide bus information for the
blind in braille at our own ex
pense,” he added
Buses run seven days a week
and provide service "within
three blocks of 85 percent of the
households in the Eugene
Springfield area,” Bergeron
said. Information about routes
and timetables may be found at
all Seven-Eleven stores. First In
terstate Banks, the EMU Main
Desk and the University
Bookstore, he added.
“One of the most important
aspects of the LTD bus system is
its service to University
students, staff and faculty."
Bergeron said.
“The administrative staff of
LTD has a commitment to serv
ing the University,” he said.
"The University and LCC repre
sent 40 to 45 percent of our total
ridership, and 90 percent of our
staff are graduates of the
University." he said.
LTD provides direct service to
both the University and Sacred
Heart Hospital. Bergeron said.
"Literally, we’ve got the
University surrounded,” he
added.
Buses run to the University
and all points of Eugene.
Bergeron said.
"The service is also good for
off-campus students who need
to get to the University." he
added.
