The relationship between the two coaches is cordial, and both sides benefit when de Oliveira brings an athlete to Dellinger's attention. The cooperation bet ween the two helps de Oliveira by providing him access to the facilities at Hayward Field (as a volunteer assistant to Dell inger), and an arena to showcase his growing stable of talent. "Our relationship is very good.” said de Oliveira. "When we do have disagreements we discuss them and work them out.” While de Souza and Chiamulera, like de Oliveira prodigies |oaquim Cruz and Uchenna Agu before them, are proven athletic talents, that alone is not enough to ensure collegiate success. Both have achieved grade point averages over 3.5, and both spent three terms at the University's Inter national language Institute learning English before they were admitted. "I talk to them a little about school, but I don’t have to say much,'' de Oliveira said. "They know what the situation is back home, and they realize what kind of opportunity they have here.” If do Oliveira had his way, he would help a lot more young athletes than just the truly gifted from his home land.
