Dellinger said. “But I'd have to
be crazy not to take a world
class athlete who is delivered to
my doorstep, especially when
every other school in the coun
try would take him in a
minute."
The relationship between the
two coaches is cordial, and both
sides benefit when de Oliveira
brings an athlete to Dellinger's
attention. The cooperation bet
ween the two helps de Oliveira
by providing him access to the
facilities at Hayward Field (as a
volunteer assistant to Dell
inger), and an arena to
showcase his growing stable of
talent.
"Our relationship is very
good.” said de Oliveira. "When
we do have disagreements we
discuss them and work them
out.”
While de Souza and
Chiamulera, like de Oliveira
prodigies |oaquim Cruz and
Uchenna Agu before them, are
proven athletic talents, that
alone is not enough to ensure
collegiate success. Both have
achieved grade point averages
over 3.5, and both spent three
terms at the University's Inter
national language Institute
learning English before they
were admitted.
"I talk to them a little about
school, but I don’t have to say
much,'' de Oliveira said. "They
know what the situation is back
home, and they realize what
kind of opportunity they have
here.”
If do Oliveira had his way, he
would help a lot more young
athletes than just the truly
gifted from his home land. "Un
fortunately, we can only help
the kids who are good enough
to get scholarships get a college
education. 1 would like to give
everyone in my country a
chance, but if I tried to help
everyone I couldn’t help
anyone.”
I)e Oliveira's empathy for
less-gifted athletes runs deep,
perhaps because he was such a
poor trackstor himself. ”1 loved
track when I was young, but I
was pretty terrible I think that
helps me now. because maybe I
can understand the problems of
n kid who does not have the
natural talent." he said.
That understanding con
tinues to appeal to runners of all
ages and talents, beginning in
1975 with an awkward 11 -year
old named Cruz, through the
current crop of world-class
distance runners who train with
him now (including Cruz.
Olympic 800-meter finalist Jose
Luiz Barbosa. Mary Slaney. and
Claudette Croenendaal). and on
to future stars like Pedro da
Silva, a decathlete who will
compete for Oregon next
season, the loyalty runs deep.
Jampolsky gets second
Wendy Brown of USC overcame Oregon's Camille Jam
polsky Tuesday to win the women's heptathlon at the Pacific
10 (Conference championships at Oregon State University in
Corvallis
The USC junior, who also plays basketball for the Trojans,
is one of the country's leading triple jumpers ami is con
sidered a contender as a hoptathlete on the U S. squad for the
Olympic games in 1*188
Brown scored 5,589 total points to Jampolsky's second
place total of 5,477 points, a new Oregon school record. The
Oregon junior held a slim edge over Brown, 3.095 to 3.084,
after the first day of competition on Monday.
The men's decathlon was also completed Tuesday. Oregon
had no entrants in the event The remaining events will take
place Friday and Saturday at OSU.
In the heptathlon's second-day events. lanqxilsky faltered
slightly. She claimed third in the long jump wilh a leap of
1»-1 ?>. dropped to sixth in the javelin with a heave of 122-4
and finished third in the 800 meters at 2:23.
“I don't think Wendy Brown overcame Camille," said
Oregon assistant coach Mark Stream "She just hail a soli par

jampolsky is scheduled to compete in the long jump,
110-meter high hurdles and high jump on for the Ducks on
Friday.
