UO Bookstore Voter’s Guide Board of Directors Election Eligible voters include current UO students, faculty, and classified staff members. VOTE TODAY at the EMU or UO BOOKSTORE Candidate Statements Freshman Position One to be elected • Vote for one FREDDY VILCHES My name Is Freddy Vilches I am an undergraduate studying mustc and Spanish I have experience working with people in different kinds of organization settings, both in my own country, Chile, and here In the U S Currently I am an active participant In the International Cultural Student Program (ICSP) an outreach program of the U of O to the community I am also a member of the Chlcano Latino Student Organization (MECHA) and of the local Latin American folk music group SANDUNGA For all these reasons I feel I will be a good representative of the student body to the U of O Bookstore As a member of the Board I will try to reflect the students’ needs so that the U of O Bookstore can more accurately meet those needs Among my priorities are the maintenance of the 11 % student discount on books and the improvement of the current buy and sell policy for used books I will also propose a more varied and creative selection of magazines and periodical literature I also feel that the U of O Bookstore could be more accessi ble for physically impaired people NEILL PLANT Hello! I'm Neill Plant and I m running tor the Freshman seat of the University Bookstore Board of Directors Over the past two weeks I have been talking to some of you and seeing just what you think about our Bookstore I have heard good and bad com ments on its operation and structure The Bookstore here is one of the best in the na tion all around I do not propose any major sweep ing changes that would upset the Bookstore's smooth operation, but rather to continue the long history of success and service to you the customer I believe that I am better qualified and more ex perienced than the other candidates based on these four facts 1) On Alaska stale wide governance boards for VICA and ASAG 2) More than 4 years of dedicated and responsi bie service to peers in elected office in 6 separate organizations 3) Voted Most Outstanding Senior for academic excellence and service to school and community as voted by teachers and administration 4) Full time employee for U S Senator Ted Stevens during Summer 86 Remember to please vote for Neill Plant for Freshman Seat JOSHUA M. I have become knowledgeable ol the budgetary pro cess I leel I have the qualifications and the desire necessary to be an effective, concerned member ol the Bookstore Board I would appreciate your input and ideas I would also appreciate your vote Thank you HEATHER COPELAND My name is Heather Copeland I am running lor a position on the University's Bookstore Board to ensure the U of O Bookstore continues to repre sent the campus community Many students teel cheated when they purchase their books, but this is because ol a lack of understanding concerning the Bookstore's nonprofit status and current 11 *. book discount With improper management, however, the Bookstore's uncommon discount could quickly disappear Another matter ol impor tance is the quality ol the Bookstore's merchan dlse Does it satisfy the wants and needs ol the student? I am aware ol some ol Ihe concerns ol Ihe student who is relatively new lo the University Having been a Board member. I am aware ol Ihe legal and ethical responsibilities which comes with that position The Bookstore Board ol Directors will be facing some difficult decisions in the coming term of of lice I would like to continue serving you. the membership, in the capacity ol sophomore representative lo the Board As a Board member. I will continue working on those issues which con cern you and I as members book costs, ac testability concerns, and a variety/price ratio which makes ihe Bookstore responsive to you Graduate Position One to be elected • Vote for one JOERN WETTERN I am running for the Bookstore Board of Direc tor* because I want to continue the work I did dur mg the last two years in this position Not only did I enjoy being on the Board, but I also gained e« penence that could be beneficial to the Bookstore and its members in the future I consider the following as primary Issues for the Board's agenda -While the book discount was raised to 11%, we have to try to make book* more affordable -The General Books selection was expanded, but it could be better -The Bookstore is being made handicapped ac cessible More can be done here loo -Increased availability of used books should be one of the maior concerns of the Board -The Board has to make sure that Bookstore employees get adequate compensation for their work J. If reelected, I will use my ex perience lo make decisions thal are beneficial to all members, so the Bookstore can offer the best service possible today and be strong tomorrow Being a member of Students of a Progressive Agenda (SPA).
