Letters Please vote First 1 would 1 ik** to thank the 1,144 University students who voted for me last Wednesday and Thursday. I am very grateful to all of you and am looking forward to serving you during the next two years. Second. 1 urge all of you to exercise your voting right once again. 1 am sure you all are familiar with the CSRL ticket that I ran on. My co-members also need your vote once again. Please, for the good of our University, vote for Sandra Thompson. Collin Farrell. J.B. Leahy. Ron Munion and Wayne Skill for the Incidental Fee Committee. Vote for yourCSRL endorsed Student Senate and for the best people for the ASl K) Executive: Kasey Brooks and Karen Gaffney. Last of all, I ask all of vou to support your Marching Band. Basketball Band and the Green Carter Band by voting yes on Ballot Measure 7, and to keep the Ducks in the PAG-10 (and receive free student tickets to all athletic events) with a yes vote on Ballot Measure 9. 1 lelp your University improve by taking advantage of your right: PLEASE VOTE! Lisa Y. Nichols EMU Board electee Diversity The University is a place where diversity and in dividualism are actively en couraged among all students and not a select few. The list of programs funded by incidental fees reflects this diversity. I find it encouraging to see programs as diverse as MKChA. Jewish Student Union, and ('.ALA all being funded in a fair and equal manner. Unfortunate ly, this could all change if the Concerned Students for Respon sive Leadership have their way. The ('SRI, platform is notably deficient in its support for minority students and their needs. Should we. as some of the CSRL candidates have sug gested, fund only those groups Correction Monday’s and Wednes day’s editorials incorrectly stated the purpose of Ballot Measure 5 as opposing the Riverfront Research Park. Ballot Measure 5 calls for preserving the playing field at the south bank site and recommends constructing the research park in another location. The Emerald apologizes for any confusion this may have caused. As a student I cannot per sonally support any candidate who wishes to disenfranchise any other student because of their race, religion or sexual orientation. The University is a communi ty of individuals, and as such, should he represented by a per son who respects the rights ami needs of all the students and not just tiir majority Pieter Paulson Chemistv. Knglish Passing laws I’m not one to voice agree ment with many Soviet policies Hut according to an ar ticle in the Oregonian (Sept. 7). "In the Soviet Union, homosex uality is punishable by up to . eight years in prison.” And I understand, from other reports, that AIDS is extremely rare in the U.S.S.R. When the American Constitu tion was adopted, homosexuali ty was illegal in all lit states. Up until about 20 years ago similar laws were still on the books throughout America Personal ly. I don’t see that we were any worse off for having such statutes. II the Oregon Legislature passes the gay rights hill cur -- rently before! it. I have no doubts th.it Oregonians will organize! a refer*!nduin and throw it out. Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea for organizers of such a referendum to circulate a se cond measure reinstating laws against sodomy. I'll bet that woulel pass toe». Sharon I..
