Gorman plans for a bright future> new economic life for Springfield By Sarah Barton Of thr Emerald W hen Richard G o r rn a n graduated from the University in 1972 with a bachelor of science degree in political science, little did he know that soon he would lx; channeling his academic interests to politics on a daily basis as Springfield’s new mayor. A chiropractor in his spare time, Gorman is the owner of Garden Way Chiropractic Clinic, a place often frequented by University athletes with sports-related injuries. He is also a single father, and most recently, since the Nov. 4 general election, the city of Springfield’s newly in augurated mayor. Gorman addressed a group of high school students Thursday who were visiting the city hall to learn the ropes of local government. Gorman told the students to “get involved in the communi ty.*’ and adapting the famous maxim by John F. Kennedy, he told them, “Ask not what your city can do for you but what your city can do for you.” One of Gorman’s goals during his term as mayor is to improve Springfield’s future, he said. “The City Council is really pulling together,” Gorman said. “They’re really excited about some of the things that are going to happen as far as economic development in Springfield.” r>ince ne iook over me mayor’s office, Gorman has come up with a variety of solu tions for the economic problems in Springfield, which is the se cond largest industrial center in Oregon, he said. One solution is the Private In vestment Incentive Program (PUP), the brainchild of former mayor John Lively, who resign ed his office prematurely to become city manager. PIIP is a multi-faceted plan to bring new economic life to .Springfield by creating 3,500 to 4,500 new jobs, Gorman said. One of the first steps in the plan was the creation of a com mercial and industrial develop ment committee, whose members have been appointed by the mayor. Gorman said. “We are focusing on three areas — economic develop ment, city beautification and the formation of a sister city committee,’’ he said. Gorman will participate in a tour of Japan and attempt to establish a sister city relation ship with a Japanese city to at tract more businesses to Springfield, he said. -emu__ Why Cook . . . Gorman also will attempt to work more closely with the city of Eugene in the future so the two cities may avoid un necessary competition, be said. "We have to maintain a united front." he said.
