Introducing Goldschmidt, Sen. President John Kit/haber asserted his confidence in the new governor. "In Neil Goldschmidt we’ve been given a new governor who typifies the Oregon spirit: innovative, in telligent. and above all else, determined to make Oregon a better place." he said. In her address. House Speaker Vera Katz claimed several people have asked her. "Aren’t you excited about the new governor?” As a result of Goldschmidt's win, "Few have not felt it — that palpable sense of excitement in the air that animates so many of our conver sations. that spark of communi ty and common purpose that has stirred in our soul before." Katz said. Several audience members laughed appreciatively as Goldschmidt hitched up his pants in preparation for taking the oath. Goldschmidt joined in the ruckus with a whoop of his own after making his pledges. The newly -crowned Goldschmidt descended the rostrum in a musical proces sion. His family joined him in a reception line where he greeted his citizens and signed autographs. Goldschmidt also hosted a public reception in the capitol Monday evening. The 64th legislative assembly was also sworn in early Monday. No one has complained at all.” he said. “We have higher salaries, the same benefits, and Food Value offers profit sharing, which employees of other stores do not have. "Plus, we don’t have to pay $24 monthly union dues,” he added. Wallace believes the picket is doing some good, but he’s not sure how much. He noticed that until August, there was a steady drop in customers and an in crease in people who had left the store because it is non union.
