posals but did declare his goals.
“We will build an economy that
is a magnet for opportunity and
an economy that attracts suc
cess. We will stake Oregon’s
claim to business profitability,
and we will assert the manifold
comparative advantages of all of
Oregon.”
Goldschmidt expects to be
measured by how well he
fulfills his pledge “that the
Oregon we leave our children
will be enhanced and enriched
and in no way diminished by
the decisions we make and the
work we do,” he said.
Introducing Goldschmidt,
Sen. President John Kit/haber
asserted his confidence in the
new governor. "In Neil
Goldschmidt we’ve been given
a new governor who typifies the
Oregon spirit: innovative, in
telligent. and above all else,
determined to make Oregon a
better place." he said.
In her address. House
Speaker Vera Katz claimed
several people have asked her.
"Aren’t you excited about the
new governor?” As a result of
Goldschmidt's win, "Few have
not felt it — that palpable sense
of excitement in the air that
animates so many of our conver
sations. that spark of communi
ty and common purpose that
has stirred in our soul before."
Katz said.
Several audience members
laughed appreciatively as
Goldschmidt hitched up his
pants in preparation for taking
the oath. Goldschmidt joined in
the ruckus with a whoop of his
own after making his pledges.
The newly -crowned
Goldschmidt descended the
rostrum in a musical proces
sion. His family joined him in a
reception line where he greeted
his citizens and signed
autographs. Goldschmidt also
hosted a public reception in the
capitol Monday evening.
The 64th legislative assembly
was also sworn in early
Monday.

McKay, the previous owner.
Shortly thereafter, the union
hired people to walk a picket

“The goal is to make
customers aware that this is a
non-union store and hopefully
get them to not shop here.”
Wallace said.

Store manager Rich Dahl said
the store is not in the union
because the employees have
continually voted against union
representation.
“It’s not a case of employees
calling up the union demanding
that the store be unionized. No
one has complained at all.” he
said. “We have higher salaries,
the same benefits, and Food
Value offers profit sharing,
which employees of other stores
do not have.
"Plus, we don’t have to pay
$24 monthly union dues,” he
added.
Wallace believes the picket is
doing some good, but he’s not
sure how much. He noticed that
until August, there was a steady
drop in customers and an in
crease in people who had left
the store because it is non
