The repertory company is designed to use as little equip ment as possible, according to Stone. "All we need when we go anywhere is some space and a piano," Stone says. The. groups' song repertoire includes "broadway show music, \azz. blues, and some rock," Stone adds. Performance numbers are upbeat and high energy tunes and provide "more opportunity lor small group numbers," he says. Despite its performing aspect, the USDT attracts students from many other fields of interest. "When we started off, we had a lot of dance and theater majors," says Stone. "Now we have peo ple from about every major you can think of." "The Song and Dance Troupe is open to people who like to sing and dance," says Mary Russell, troupe member and rhetoric and communications major. "It's a great opportunity for someone who likes dancing and singing to perform all year round. That's why it's so much a University thing and not just a (dance) school function." The troupe also draws students who are in terested in musical theater. "Joining the Song and Dance Troupe got me into the theater department," says Chad McCord, theater major. "It was my leeway into the acting world." Dance routines are choreographed by both students and faculty members involved with the troupe. Choreography for ensemble numbers have been contributed by troupe members Sun Sun Fu, rhetoric and communications major, Michael Stone, music merchandising major, Jill Harry, music major, and by dance instructor, Robin Collen. However, neither the choral arrangements nor the dance routines performed by troupe members are very complicated, Stone says. "It's a good place for the students to improve their skills," Stone adds. In addition to its performing aspect, the Univer sity Song and Dance Troupe is also a year-long class. Troupe members meet for two hours every Tues day and Thursday and receive a total of two credit hours, one in voice and the other in dance. Student coordinators, the "Group of Four," are elected by group members. These members devote an extra four hours a week to the troupe and are mainly responsible for taking care of "administrative details," says Becky Markee. student coordinator. "What really makes the group is the fact that it is student-run,” Markee adds. Student coordinators are responsible for plann ing rehearsals, sending out promotional materials and deciding on the number of sinqers for each song. This wholehearted involvement and dedication to the troupe has finally paid off. Talent, time and energy are being recognized by prominent people in the entertaiment arena. Three months after submitting a videotape of the USDT repertoire to officials in charge of Expo '86, troupe members were finally informed of their decision. The officials wanted the University Song and Dance Troupe to perform in Expo '86. A total of four performances will be held. Troupe members are scheduled to perform on June 19, 20 and 21. Prior to their concert performance in Expo'86, the University Song and Dance Troupe will be performing at the Seattle Center." Members are very excited at the prospect of performing live at the Expo. "This is exactly what the group needs," Markee says. "We need the visibility. And, we need to perform in a professional atmosphere like that (Expo '86)." This undercurrent of excitement "puts vitality into everything," Markee adds. Also, group interaction between the members has been enhanced. "There's a real enerqy among everyone," Markee says. "It's the performing energy that brings us altogether."
